5th September 2015

There is only one week of football to go for most of Awakeri's football teams.
The youngest teams continue to enjoy their season. Awakeri Athletic Grade 6 returned to their usual unbeatable form this week. Athletic had a 1-1 draw, 1-0 win and a 3-1 win. Goals came from Eli Tootell (2), Kyle Hennessey-McKay (2) and Arran Dominick. The player of the day was Kyle Hennessey-McKay for great goals and enthusiasm.
Also in the 6th grade, Awakeri Phoenix's first game was against Kawerau, winning 3 - 0. Max Schlepers and Alex Whiteman (2) scored the goals. Max got into the action and played hard. In the second game, Phoenix played Ohope Jellyfish. Nate Parsons, Alex, and Tyler Wardlaw scored one goal each. Players of the day went to Billy Butterworth, who set up a goal with excellent passing, and Max Schelpers.
Awakeri Magic all did very well in their 6th grade games. They have all improved a lot since the start of the season. Players of the day went to Fergus Rowe, Aaron Best and Zeana Van Beek.
In the 8th grade, Eastern Bay Curtains 4U Awakeri Ninjas won against Kawerau Sports 5 – 2, while Awakeri Avengers had a disappointing 4 - 3 loss to Saints Stingers.
Awakeri Titans lost their 9th grade game to Ohope Stingrays. It was a well fought match, but once again the opposition was too strong for the Titans. However, they gave it their all and had a great game. The player of the day went to Stevie Read for her great running on the wing. Titans have had excellent parent support all season.
Also in the 9th grade, EBOP Plant Services Awakeri Aces had a good game against the Ohope Stingrays. The Aces put up a good challenge, however Stingrays won by a few goals. Mitchell Du Toit was named player of the day for great chasing up and commitment to the ball. He also read the game and anticipated the play well.
Designline Kitchens Awakeri Dragons went down to Kawerau 5 - 0 in the 11th grade. Kawerau were a very sharp team with excellent ball skills. Dragons' player of the day was to Maya Wills.
Also in the 11th grade, SLH Contracting Awakeri Warriors won away against Allandale Arrows 6 - 1. Jamie Julian scored one goal and his brother Cambell scored 5 goals, in a player of the day performance!
Awakeri Blue Strikers had an exciting game against Whakatane Town Avengers in the 13th grade, unfortunately losing 5 - 1. It was a fast paced game and Awakeri had a lot of ball possession. Rhylee Mahy scored the well-deserved goal. Player of the day went to Nicole Webb, for her great improvement as a fullback, and to Kyla McGuire for her strong performance as goalie and striker. Thanks to those extra younger players who filled in for Strikers due to a lot of illness.
Private Asset Management 13th grade Awakeri Comets had their final game of the season away at St Joseph's. The smaller sized pitch led to a much tighter game. In a very even match, neither side were able to break the deadlock in the first half. In the second half there were several goalmouth scrambles at either end, before Kevin Paulsen hit a high ball which found its way into the St Josephs net to provide the only goal of the game and give Awakeri the win. Players of the day were Ben Olifiers who had an excellent game in goal, Olivia Sheaff who was very strong in defence and Gemma Baldey, who kept running and hassling in midfield. Comets kept fighting and never stopped trying the whole game and were rewarded with the late win. It was very tense for those watching but a great way to finish their season.
