A first win for the all-girls Awakeri Panthers in the 8th grade was the highlight for Awakeri's football teams on Saturday.
Panthers had a brilliant game against Allandale and won 6 - 3. All the girls looked for passes, read the play and put their hearts and souls into the game. Asha Van Veen scored twice. Milan Laurent, Aramia Hanlen, Rhianna Rowe and Tylah Bateson all scored a goal each. The whole team got player of the day and left their coaches feeling proud!
Awakeri 13th grade Comets were at home to Opotiki Orcas, who despite being a player down, started the stronger and took advantage of lapses in concentration in the Awakeri defence to score two goals within the first ten minutes. Awakeri were unable to break through the Opotiki defence, and there was no further score, meaning Opotiki ran out 2-0 winners. Awakeri’s player of the day was Ben White, who had an outstanding game, tackling hard and passing well in midfield.
SLH Contracting Awakeri Warriors stay competition leaders in the 11th grade 1st division after a hard fought 1 - 0 win against the Opotiki Panthers. The goal was scored by Elijah Wetting – Davidson. Player of the day was goal keeper Katie Mahy.
The EBOP Plant Services Awakeri Mud Dawgs played the Opotiki Magpies on Saturday in 11th grade division two. Unfortunately were low on numbers and went down 6 - 0. In pretty average conditions, the kids that did turn up never gave up and made their coach and parents proud. This led to them all being named players of the day.
Eastern Bay Curtains 4U Awakeri Ninjas had a 4 - 1 win against the R.D. 1 Awakeri Aces in the 9th grade. Julien Horn-Christensen was player of the day for the Ninjas, scoring a great goal and working hard all game.
Awakeri Avengers lost 6 - 0 against the Whakatane Town Sharks in the 8th grade.
Awakeri Phoenix played Poroporo Pahou in their first 7th grade game, winning 3 - 1. Alex Whiteman scored two goals and Aaran Dominick scored one. Isla Thompson defended very well. Their next game was against Ohope Orcas, a 4 – 0 win. The goal scorers were Aaran Dominick, Eli Tootell and Alex Whiteman (2). Pass of the day went to Aaran Dominick who played a cross ball to Eli who scored! Their last game was against Ohope Piranha, a win 1 - 0. Alex Whiteman was the scorer. Player of the day went to Isla Thompson.
Also in the 7th grade, Awakeri Magic did well in their three games. A 2 – 2 draw against Ohope Piranhas; a 2 – 1 win against Plains Pukekos and a 1 – 1 draw against Allandale Midgets. The player of the day was Ollie Peat.
Awakeri Rangers lost their first game in the 6th grade. Innes Tootell and Blake Murray scored in the second game, a win. In the third game Blake scored the goal. Wilson Carter is starting to get stuck in. Liv Brownlee got player of the day for her tireless running. These four played all the three games by themselves.
Also in the 6th grade, Awakeri Athletic was down two players, reducing squad depth from the usual eight to six. More running was the theme of the day. Game one versus Kawerau proved tough from the get-go with Kawerau scoring early. Awakeri rose to the challenge, hustled for every ball. Josh Spalding and Flynn Dominick got on the score sheet, finishing the game 2-1. Awakeri conceded early again in game two versus Saints Sports but continued their dogged determination. With the same goal scorers on the score sheet, the game closed 2-2. By game three, Awakeri were hungry for more goals. Jacson Heal and Ryan Cobb added to the score sheet, game finished 4-0. Overall, it was a great display of team work and effort. Player of the day was Flynn Dominick for showing amazing determination and bagging five goals.
