Awakeri’s football teams had some hard battles on Saturday.
Private Asset Management Awakeri Comets had a tough 13th grade game at home against Whakatane Phoenix.  Awakeri defended well against a good Whakatane attack and were beaten by a goal in each half, going down 2-0. Their players of the day were Ben Davey-Emms and Cambell Julian who battled hard up front.
In the 11th grade 1st division, SLH Contracting Awakeri Warriors had a great win away from home. Playing the Ohope Seahawks, the Warriors scored early. By half time they were up 4-0 with all four goals being scored by Samuel East. Elijah Wetting Davidson came out of goal in the second half and got on the scoresheet. Lucian Bain played well and was rewarded with a brace of goals as well. Their player of the day went to Samuel East. The final score was 7 – 1 to Warriors.
The EBOP Plant Services Awakeri Mud Dawgs had a 1-1 draw with Saints in the 11th grade 1st division. The player of the day was shared between Savannah Stewart and Josh Broadmore, who were outstanding in defending the goal. Mary Bragg scored the goal after some excellent passing from the midfielders.
In the 9th grade, the Eastern Bay Curtains 4U Awakeri Ninjas won 3 - 2 against Whakatane Town.  The Ninjas started slowly and were 2 nil down at half time but came out firing in the second half.  Joseph Spalding was player of the day for his high work rate, both on attack and defence. Ben Peat also had a good game scoring a hat trick.
Awakeri Aces had a 2 - 0 win over Allandale in the 9th grade, with both goals scored by Kaleb Grindrod. Special mention to Michael Seales and Lily Muggeridge who are both developing into promising players. There were solid performances by Kobi Wetting-Davidson and Sophie Growden. Ashlee Jennings had a great run on the wing and Michael Griffiths improved his game this week. The player of the day went to Jon Tiwha-Smith who put in two searing crosses and for delivering early passes, opening the field up.
In the 8th grade, Awakeri Avengers played against Whakatane Town Sharks and won 7 - 3.
The team is really starting to play well together.  Ryan Somerville was player of the game for high work load and scoring two goals. Other goal scorers were: Patrick Jones(2), Barclay Fort (2) and Tejay Robinson.
The all-girls Awakeri Panthers lost again in the 8th grade, 4-0 to Allandale, but played an awesome game. It was a big improvement on last week's game. There was lots of teamwork happening. Their player of the day was Milan Laurent for great attacking skills.
In the 7th grade, Awakeri Magic played Kawerau Red Hots (1 all); Whakatane Town Makos (1 - 2) and Awakeri Phoenix (0 all). Their player of the day was Jed Moloney.
Also in the 7th grade, Awakeri Phoenix played Kawerau Sports Club Avengers, Allandale Midgets, and Awakeri Magic. All three games had nil all results. The Phoenix had an awesome day playing as a cohesive team: passing, calling for the ball and playing down the line at the pass in. The player of the day was Arran Dominick for great all round play!
Awakeri Athletic 6th grade had another full and determined squad. Game one ended with a 1-1 draw and it was Flynn Dominick who ensured Awakeri's hard work paid off with a well-deserved goal. Game two ended in a 1-0 loss but Awakeri showed great character and fought hard until the full-time whistle. Game three was another tough game and Joshua Spalding got on the score sheet ensuring Awakeri Athletic finished the day in winning form.  Addison Neill was the player of the day after her outstanding contribution to the team’s performance.
Awakeri Mustangs only had one game in the 6th grade and they beat Plains Strikers 6 - nil.
Awakeri Rangers named Innes Tootell  their player of the day, he is growing in confidence. Billy Butterworth scored the only goal for the Rangers. In their first game 4-1 lost to Allandale, the second and third games Rangers played Thornton for 0-0. They were hard fought games for no result.
