The Awakeri Mud Dawgs having their first win of the season was the highlight for Awakeri's football teams on Saturday.
EBOP Plant Services Mud Dawgs played Saints Tigers in the 11th grade second division. The team played really well and contributed to both goals in a 2 – 0 win. The goal scorers were Daniel Parsons and Ella Forbes. The players of the day were to Daniel Parsons and Kennedy Annan, who both played well in their positions.
In the 13th grade, Private Asset Management Awakeri Comets were away to second placed Whakatane Phoenix. Whakatane missed a couple of early chances and were frustrated by some excellent goalkeeping from one of the players of the day, Reaf Bruce, before opening the scoring. Then an unfortunately timed tackle saw Awakeri put the ball into their own net for Phoenix to double their tally before half-time. In the second half, Whakatane increased their lead before Cody Cook completed a well-worked team goal for the Comets. The match ended 3-1 to Whakatane but the Awakeri team played one of their best games of the season, with some great team work, passing and defensive play, especially from the other player of the day, Daniel Brown.
SLH Contracting Awakeri Warriors won their 11th grade first division game by default from Kutarere.
In the 9th grade, the Eastern Bay Curtains 4U Awakeri Ninjas drew 1 all against Whakatane Phoenix. It was a well contested game. Joseph Spalding scored the Ninjas goal. Ben Peat was player of the day.
R.D. 1 Awakeri Aces played very well but their 9th grade opposition (Ohope Snappers) was very strong. Aces eventually lost 7-1. A player of the day wasn't picked because the whole team tried so hard.
Fresh from their first win last week, the Awakeri Panthers had a good game in the 8th grade against Ohope Sharks, but lost 3-1. Asha Van Veen scored the goal. Trista Baker was their player of the day; she showed lots of courage and determination!
Also in the 8th grade, Awakeri Avengers had another loss, 2-7 to Ohope Marlins. Avengers all played well, tried their best and never gave up. Patrick Jones was player of the day, for playing a great attack and defence game and scoring the two goals.
Awakeri Magic had a good day in the 7th grade. In their three games, they played Plains Pukekos (a 0 – 0 draw); Ohope Piranha (a 1 – 0 win) and Ohope Orca (1 – 1 draw). Their player of the day was Aaron Best.
Also in the 7th grade, Awakeri Phoenix did well too. First up was Ohope Orca, a 1 – 0 win with Eli Tootell scoring the goal, thanks to a brilliant cross from Nate Parsons. Next was against Poroporo Pahou - a 0-0 draw, Max Schlepers had a great game on attack. Thirdly was Kawerau Sports Red Hots, which was a 3-1 win. The goal scorers were Eli with one goal and Alex Whiteman with two. Player of the day went to Max Schlepers for his excellent work on attack.
Awakeri Athletic Grade 6 had a full squad and Game 1 against Awakeri Mustangs proved tough which finished as a 3-0 loss even though the team worked hard. Game 2 was against Whakatane Town Starfish 6 which Awakeri Athletic dominated, Ryan Cobb and Josh Spalding both got on the score sheet. The game closed 2-0. Game 3 was against Awakeri Rangers and finished 1-0 with Josh Spalding getting on the score sheet once again. Player of the day was Addison Neill for exhibiting great determination and ball control in all three games.
Awakeri Athletic 6th grade had a full squad. Awakeri Mustangs proved tough opposition in the first game and won 3-0 even though the Athletic worked hard. Athletic controlled the next game, against Whakatane Town Starfish. Ryan Cobb and Josh Spalding both got on the score sheet in a 2 – 0 win. The third game was against Awakeri Rangers. It finished 1-0 with Josh Spalding the scorer. Player of the day was Addison Neill for exhibiting great determination and ball control in all three games. Player of the day for Awakeri Rangers was Wilson Carter.
