Awakeri's football teams were involved in some exciting action on Saturday.
In the 13th grade Private Asset Management Awakeri Comets played Whakatane Town Avengers. It was an even battle with both teams having good periods of attack. Comets scored first when Ben Davey-Emms got away on the counter attack and scored. Kemp Taylor evened the score up with a well struck shot from the edge of the penalty area. In the second half Cambell Julian was fouled in the penalty area but the spot kick was saved by the Whakatane keeper. However, Davey-Emms scored a late winner to give Comets a 2 – 1 win. Kaleb Muggeridge's excellent defending earned him player of the match. Others to shine included Matthew Reihana-Asquith and Daniel Brown.
In the 11th grade grading rounds Awakeri's teams had a variety of results. SLH Contracting Awakeri Warriors played Whakatane Titans in the 11th grade, winning 5 – 2. Warriors' goals were scored by Ollie Fort (2), Sam East, Rhys Robertson and Elijah Wetting-Davidson. The player of the match was Frank Butler, who was very strong in defence.
EBOP Plant Services Awakeri Mud Dawgs played Kutarere in the 11th grade. The score was 1 – 1 at half time, but the larger Kutarere players wore the Mud Dawgs down and went on to win 5 – 1. Player of the match Mitchell Du Toit had a great all round game. Ella Forbes also played well and was the goal scorer.
R.D. 1 Awakeri Thunder were more organised this week, but were missing players for their 11th grade game against Whakatane Strikers. Thunder played well and had some shot at goal, but Strikers were too strong winning 6 – 0. Dan Rowling was player of the day and he shows a lot of potential.
Eastern Bay Curtains 4U Awakeri Ninjas played well against Opotiki Magpies in the 9th grade, winning 7 - 1. Ben Peat was player of the day with a high work rate and some good goals.
Also in the 9th grade, Awakeri Aces played Saints Stingers. Aces put together some great passes and crosses. Kobi Wetting-Davidson and Jon Tiwha-Smith were the goal scorers with four each. Player of the match went to Ashlee Jennings who ran her wing all day, calling and making herself a great option. Special mention to Lily Muggeridge, who volunteered to play for the opposition when they lost a player at half time. She made some awesome defensive tackles against her team mates. Aces won the game 8 – 2.
In the 8th grade, Awakeri Avengers lost a close game against the Opotiki Magpies, 3 – 4. Tejay Robinson scored two goals and Patrick Jones one. Callum Cameron got player of the day for great team work - communicating and passing the ball well to his team mates.
Awakeri Panthers played the Plains Panthers in the 8th grade and drew 3 - 3. The all-girls team did really well this week, their focus was to dribble and control the ball as much as possible and they made a real effort to do this during the game. Asha Van Veen was the player of the match with two goals; the other goal scorer was Rhianna Rowe.
In the 7th grade, Awakeri Phoenix played Saint Stars in their first game. Neither team scored in a very well matched game. In the second game Phoenix lost 2 - 0 to Allandale Midgets. Their last game was against Kawerau Sports. Again this was a well matched game with no score on the board at full time. Player of the day went to Eli Tootell, for the second week in a row, for putting in 100% on attack and defence in all three games.
Awakeri Magic had a great day in the 7th grade. They won their first game against Allandale Eagles 2 - 1 and the second game they lost against Kawerau Sports Club 0 - 1. The player of the day was Oliver Peat.
Awakeri Mustangs won all their three games in the 6th grade, with Jayden Grindrod player of the day.
Awakeri Athletic 6th grade put in another great performance winning all three games (2-1, 1-0, 1-0). Player of the day went to Flynn Dominick for bagging his first competitive goal and showing great determination.
For Awakeri Rangers, Lucy Overdevest scored 3 goals in the first game. 3-0. Then Lucy scored twice, Addie Tetze and Billy Butterworth got a goal each. 4-0. Addie got player of the day.
