There were some crucial games for Awakeri's football teams on Saturday as the season nears its climax
In the 13th grade, Private Asset Management Awakeri Comets had their last home game for the season against Whakatane Intermediate Foxy Feet girls. Comets had some good attacks, hitting the post twice before Emma Ferguson scored a goal for Foxy Feet just before half-time. In the second half, Awakeri had the perfect start when Cambell Julian scored a quick goal, followed up by first goals of the season from Daniel Brown and Ben White. Ben Olifiers completed the scoring for a 4 - 1 victory. Player of the day was Tayla Jones who ran and battled hard all game.
SLH Contracting Awakeri Warriors paid the price for hesitant football, losing 2 - 0 to Whakatane Titans in the 11th grade 1st division. This result throws the league wide open with two games remaining. A string of fantastic saves by second half keeper Elijah Wetting earned him player of the day, but they weren't enough and the pressure eventually told. Kalib Schuler also performed well at left back but across the paddock Titans were hungry and committed. Warriors must win their remaining games to stake a claim for title.
In the 11th grade 2nd division EBOP Plant Services Awakeri Mud Dawgs played the Plains Wanderers losing 4 - 2. The game was very even with the score locked at 2 - 2 till almost full time, when a couple of unfortunate lapses in defence let the Wanderers in for two quick goals. Ella Forbes scored both goals for the Mud Dawgs. Player of the day went to both Josh Broadmore and Myles Ashton who were determined in defence.
The Eastern Bay Curtains 4U Awakeri Ninjas had a hard fought game in the 9th grade against the Ohope Snappers, winning 1 - 0. The energy levels and commitment shown by both teams was brilliant. Brad Yuill scored the only goal. The player of the day was shared by the whole Ninjas team.
R.D. 1 Awakeri Aces had a tough day against Whakatane Phoenix in the 9th grade, going down 6 - 3. The player of the day was Mia Kennedy.
In the 8th grade the all-girls Awakeri Panthers were on fire, winning 6 - 0 against the Plains Panthers! Milan Laurent stood out, scoring three goals. The girls didn't hold back. They played well defensively and attacked well by passing the ball and scoring goals through team work. It was the perfect way to end their season!
The Awakeri Avengers lost 3 - 5 against the Opotiki Magpies in their 8th grade game. Nathan Reihana-Asquith was the player of the day. Ryan Somerville, Patrick Jones and Barclay Fort scored the goals for the Avengers.
In the 7th grade, Awakeri Magic played three games. They had a 2 – 1 loss against Poroporo Pahou; a 1 – 0 win against Ohope Orca and a 1 – 0 win against Ohope Piranha. The player of the day was Kyle Hennessy-McKay.
Also in the 7th grade, Awakeri Phoenix played Ohope Orca, winning 1 – 0 with a fantastic first goal from Isla Thompson. Their second game was against Ohope Piranhas. It was a 0 - 0 draw but Phoenix were very strong on attack. Their final game was against Kawerau Sports Avengers, a 1 – 0 win. Aaran Dominick scored the only goal. Phoenix dominated on attack in all three games. The player of the day went to Isla Thomson for great attacking play.
In the 6th grade Awakeri Mustangs won all their three games. It was a good team effort with the players passing the ball well to each other.
Awakeri Rangers had three losses in their 6th grade games. Addie Tetze scored in their last game and she got player of the day.
