Bad weather meant only two of Awakeri's football teams played on Saturday.
A depleted 13th grade Private Asset Management Awakeri Comets side, missing four players, were at home against Whakatane Intermediate Foxy Feet. A hard to hold slippery ball led to the visitors scoring from a rebound after 30 seconds, but Comets fought hard despite having one player less on the field than the opposition. They restricted Foxy Feet with some great team work in defence. Foxy Feet used their four substitutes well to keep their team fresh and scored two goals in each half to record a 4-0 win. Comets players of the day were Inderpreet Ajuila, who battled hard in defence, and Tyler Lang who was superb in goal. He made some great saves in very difficult conditions.
In the 11th grade SLH Contracting Awakeri Warriors played at home, also in the wind and rain, against Kutarere. The first half was fairly even, mostly due to the excellent skills of the visiting goalkeeper. The Warriors played very well and their passing game started to tell in the second half. Goals to Elijah Wetting-Davidson (2), Kalib Schuler (2), Samuel East and Frank Butler brought a 6 – 3 win the Warriors. Their player of the day was gritty defender Oscar Mahy.
