Awakeri’s football teams played some exciting games in the frost on Saturday!
Private Asset Management Awakeri Comets played their best game of the season at home on a frosty pitch against Saints Shooters in the 13th grade. Excellent Comets team work led to first half goals from Cambell Julian, Tiare Butler and two from Ben Davey-Emms. The second half became much more even, with Tyler Lang scoring his first goal before St Joseph’s got a consolation goal. Saints could have scored a lot more, but for some great saves by player of the day Reaf Bruce in goal. Tayla Jones also earned a player of the day certificate for an outstanding performance in midfield. The final score was 5 – 1.
SLH Contracting Awakeri Warriors played at home against Kutarere in the 11th grade 1st division. Samuel East and Elijah Wetting Davidson scored first half goals for the Warriors. Bradley Burr was the Warrior’s goalie in the first half and he saved a couple of great shots on goal. He then came out of goal for the second half and scored two goals himself, to make the final score 4 – 0. He was duly named player of the day!
In the 11th grade second division, EBOP Plant Services Awakeri Mud Dawgs played an action packed game against Whakatane Town Strikers. The game ended with the score 4-4. Goals for the Mud Dawgs were scored by Ella Forbes, Mitchell Du Toit, and two by Phoebe Carter. The players of the day were Joshua Broadmore, for a great all round game, and Seth Templeman for great defence. Ella Forbes and Mia Sutton also had outstanding games. Shaun Snow made some excellent saves in goal.
In the 9th grade, Eastern Bay Curtains 4U Awakeri Ninjas had a 2 - 2 draw against Ohope. It was a really hard fought game. Mason Nurkka was player of the day for the Ninjas with a huge effort on defence.
Awakeri Aces went down 2 – 1 in their 9th grade game against Opotiki Magpies. It was a great game, well fought by Awakeri with lots of opportunities that weren't converted. This included one shot that hit the post! Jon Tiwha-Smith was the goal scorer. Player of the day was Michael Seales, for his sound defence and awesome keeping in the second half.
Awakeri Avengers had a comfortable win against Ohope in the 8th grade, winning 7 – 1. Nathan Reihana-Asquith was their player of the day.
Also in the 8th grade, the all-girls Awakeri Panthers lost to Opotiki 6 - 0. The girls really look like they have improved a lot, without having the goals to show for it. The player of the day was Aramia Hanlen, for her gutsy efforts both on defence and attack!
Awakeri Magic had three games in the 7th grade. Game 1 was against Allandale Midgets, a 2 - 0 loss. Game 2 was against Kawerau Avengers, a 2 - 0 loss. Game 3 was against Kawerau Red Stags, a 1 - 0 win. The player of the day was Ryan Lambert.
Also in the 7th grade, Awakeri Phoenix played Saints Stars, a 1-1 draw. Alex Whiteman scored the one goal, with good defence from Isla Thompson.  Their next game was against Allandale Midgets, a 3 - 1 win, with Alex Whiteman scoring the three goals. Their final game was against Kawerau Sports Avengers. Phoenix won 1 - 0 on a very muddy field! Alex Whiteman was again the scorer. Thanks to Jayden Grindrod and Fergus Rowe for filling in, they shared player of the day. Both had very good games!
The Awakeri Mustangs, without Jayden and Fergus won two and lost two of their games in the 6th grade.
