It was a tough day for Awakeri's football teams on Saturday.
In the 13th grade, Private Asset Management Awakeri Comets were away to top of the table Whakatane Intermediate Foxy Feet. Comets started very well, pushing the home team back for the first ten minutes. Foxy feet scored a goal against the run of play, but then gained confidence and added a few more goals to open up a commanding lead. Awakeri were unable to break down the Whakatane Intermediate defence and ended up losing 6-0. Players of the day were Matthew Reihana-Asquith, who played a large part in his first game back after injury and Kaleb Muggeridge who worked very hard in defence.
In the 11th grade 1st division, SLH Contracting Awakeri Warriors played a tight 2 - 2 draw with second placed Ohope Bluefins to tighten up the league even more. Ollie Fort scored and Sam East chimed in with a swerving free kick. Izak Tootell was player of the day for a half in goal and calm passing when out in the field.
In the 9th grade R.D.1 Awakeri Aces played very well, losing 1 – 0 to Whakatane Town Phoenix. Lily Muggeridge was player of the day.
The Eastern Bay Curtains 4U Awakeri Ninjas lost 9 - 3 against Ohope Snappers in the 9th grade. Ohope played really well and found holes in the Ninja's defensive line, especially late in the second half. Joseph Spalding was player of the day for a huge effort both on defence and attack.
Awakeri Panthers lost 5 – 1 to Saints Swords in the 8th grade. Tylah Bateson scored for the all-girls Panthers. Their player of the day was Zoe Laurent who impressed by looking up and passing well.
Also in the 8th grade, the Awakeri Avengers had only their second loss of the season, going down 4 – 10 to Opotiki Magpies. Avengers played well but struggled through not having any subs. Barclay Fort had an outstanding game - playing well on attack and defence and scoring two great goals. The other goals were scored by Tejay Robinson and Ryan Ashton.
In the 7th grade, Awakeri Phoenix played firstly Allandale Midgets. It was a nil all draw, a great team effort! Second up was another nil all draw, against Plains Pukekos. Their last game was against Poroporo Pahou, losing 3 - 1. Arran Dominick scored their only goal of the day. Congratulations to Nate Parsons for having an outstanding game and taking home player of the day.
Also in the 7th grade, Awakeri Magic had three games. They played Kawerau Avengers, winning 2 – 1; Allandale Midgets, a 1 - 0 loss; and Plains Pukekos, a 1 – 0 win. The player of the day was Christian Smith.
In the 6th grade, Awakeri Rangers drew their first two games 1 – 1. Blake Murray scored both the goals. Their last game was a nil all draw. Innes Tootell got player of the day for great saves and some awesome tackling.
Awakeri Athletic Grade 6 only had two games as round 2 was a bye. Game 1 was a goal fest with Jacson Heal on four, Ryan Cobb collecting a hat-trick, Addison Neill bagging one and Josh Spalding collecting two hat-tricks, game ended 14-0. Game 2 was a tough game with Awakeri throwing everything at the opposition but found themselves being caught out on the counter attack three times. Jacson Heal managed to add some consolation by bagging a goal ending the game 3-1. Player of the Day was Jacson Heal for having a great impact on both games.
