A top of the table clash in the 11th grade Championship 1st division was the highlight for Awakeri's football teams on Saturday.
Primogrow Awakeri Ninjas were away to Opotiki Magpies Premiers. It was a very good game, ending in a 1 – 1 draw. Phoebe Carter's excellent defence earned her player of the day. Kobi Wetting-Davidson was the scorer for the Ninjas.
SLH Contracting Awakeri Warriors also played Opotiki in the 13th grade. It was a well contested game, with Opotiki taking it out 6 – 2. Awakeri's scorers were Isaac Clements and Elijah Wetting-Davidson. Kieran Butler was the player of the day.
In the 11th grade 3rd division Awakeri United went down to Whakatane Firebirds in a hard fought game, not reflected by the 4 – 0 to Firebirds score-line. Shaun Miller was player of the day for United.
In the 9th grade, Awakeri Avengers won 3 - 2 against the Allandale Ninjas. Patch Jones scored twice for the Avengers with Kaleb Grindrod nabbing the other goal. Player of the day went to Callum Cameron for being a great team member and making a top save when he was goalie.
Awakeri Panthers had a great game in the 9th grade too, against Saints Swords. Panthers played very well as a team, even though they had no subs. Cullen Brown was named player of the day after scoring the goal in a 3 – 1 loss.
Awakeri Magic and Kawerau Pukekos had a really good game in the 8th grade. Both teams started off well, scoring a goal each. Awakeri then applied good pressure to the Kawerau team and started to dominate the ball for the rest of the game. Kawerau did manage to get another consolation goal. The final score was Awakeri Magic 6, Kawerau Pukekos 2. Magic worked very well together to make this one of their best games of the season. Goals were scored by Alex Whiteman, Aramia Hanlen and Arran Dominick. Player of the day went to Arran Dominick for his all round game and goal scoring.
The 7th grade played at a muddy Warren Park. Awakeri Phoenix played Saints Sparks, losing 3 - 0. Their second game was against Plains Strikers, a 4 - 0 win. Jade Mahy and Jacson Heal scored two goals each. The players of the day were Heath Brown and Jacson Heal.
Awakeri Rangers continued to punch above their weight in the 7th grade! They lost both games but left everything out on the park. Aani Butterworth was player of the day. She scored Rangers' only goal in the first game.
Superior Excavation Awakeri Athletic won one game and lost one. The kids played really well as they only had four, so lots of running around.  Player of the day was Josh Jennings for awesome play.
