Cyclone Donna might have disrupted football at several venues, but some Awakeri teams were lucky enough to play in the glorious weather on Saturday morning.
In the 11th grade, Eastern Bay Curtains4U opened their season with a good 7 – 1 win against Plains Wanderers. Player of the day Brad Yuill worked very hard on the right wing and set up a number of goals.
Awakeri Magic began their 8th grade season well too. They had a 4 – 1 win against Whakatane Town Makos. Goals were scored by Alex Whiteman, Christian Smith and Ollie Peat. Player of the day went to Ollie Peat for his scoring two of the four goals and his awesome effort throughout the game.
Awakeri's four 7th grade teams all enjoyed their games at Warren Park.
Awakeri Athletic had a great morning. They drew two games and lost one by 1 goal. All the team played very well. Player of the day was awarded to Joe Ferguson for awesome attack. Jayden Grindrod also got a certificate for first goal of the season.
Awakeri Phoenix's first game was against Otakiri, a 2-0 win with goals scored by Dominic Rowland and Addison Whiteman, thanks to a great cross from Jacson Heal. Their second game was against Awakeri Rangers - a hard fought nil all score.The third game was against Thornton, who won 1-0.
Player of the day went to Dominic Rowland for a great all round effort.
Awakeri Rangers had a great start to the season too. The players are all enjoying themselves. Flynn Dominick scored his first two goals in a 2-1 win against Plains Panthers. Rangers drew the next two games 0-0. Jaimee-Lee Nuku was player of the day.
