There were lots of good results for Awakeri's football teams on Saturday, including two teams that had their first wins of the season.
In the 13th grade, SLH Awakeri Warriors were at home to Whakatane Phoenix. Warriors defended very well in the first half and had a couple of good breaks late in the half. However, the Phoenix dominated after half time and went on to win 5 – 0. Brad Burr was named player of the day, after bravely playing on after being injured. Others to impress were left back Josh Broadmore and Bonnie-Marie Wetting-Davidson, who worked hard and played well up front.
In the 11th grade 1st division, Awakeri Ninjas played Opotiki again, after losing against them last week. Ninjas had another great game. It was 1 - 1 at half time with Kobi Wetting-Davidson scoring the goal. The Ninjas attacked really well in the second half. Ben Peat scored the winner with ten minutes to play. The defence held strong to make sure of the win 2 - 1. Phoebe Carter was the player of the day. She was solid on defence throughout. Ollie Fort was a standout in goal in the second half too.
Awakeri United had a very exciting game against Whakatane Firebirds in the 11th grade 3rd division. United grabbed their first win of the season. The goal scorers were Isak Tootell, Cole Broadmore and Jamie Hawkes. Player of the day Marshall Fox worked hard on attack and made some excellent saves in his turn in goal.
In the 9th grade, Awakeri Panthers had a fantastic game against Ohope Makos and earned their first win of the season too! The score was 1 – 0. The Panthers' player of the day was Milan Laurent who scored an awesome goal with the help of Rhiane Byers. Excellent teamwork and determination were shown by the Panthers, making for some proud parents and coaches.
The Awakeri Avengers played the Opotiki Magpies, also in the 9th grade, and won 6 - 0. The player of the day went to Tejay Robinson for great team play as well as scoring four goals. Kaleb Grindrod, Patch Jones and Ryan Ashton also got on the score-sheet.
The 8th grade Awakeri Magic had a good game, dominating the game against the Plains Wildcats to get a 6 – 0 win. Wildcats did improve later in the game. The player of the day went to Arran Dominick. The goals were scored by Ollie Peat, Alex Whiteman, Aramia Hanlen and Arran Dominick.
Awakeri Phoenix had a good morning in the 7th grade. They played Awakeri Mustangs, who won 3 – 1. Dominic Rowland was the goal scorer. Next up was Awakeri Rangers, a 1 – 0 win with Jacson Heal the scorer. Finally Phoenix played the Mustangs again, winning 2 – 0 this time, Jacson scoring both goals.
Awakeri Rangers had three good games in the 7th grade, with Harry Davidson payer of the day.
Superior Excavation Awakeri Athletic also had some awesome games in the 7th grade. New team member Paige adapted so quickly to the team that she won player of the day. She really focused and concentrated well.
