1st July 2017

Most of Awakeri's football teams had to scrape through with few or no reserves on Saturday, as the impact of widespread sickness had its impact.
Highlight of the day was the continuation of Awakeri Magic's unbeaten run in the 8th grade. Magic had a good game and managed to just beat the rain against a competitive Kawerau/Otakiri side. Alex Whiteman, Aramia Hanlen and Nate Parsons all managed to score goals, with Alex Whiteman named player of the day for his goal scoring and attacking efforts. Only six players out of the usual nine were available to play, so there was limited subbing. The score: Awakeri Magic 5, Kawerau Otakiri 1.
In the 9th grade, Awakeri Panthers all got stuck in and showed very good sportsmanship, even though they lost 6 – 0 to Allandale Ninjas. The team shared player of the day honours.
Awakeri Avengers struggled with sickness and no subs in their 9th grade game against Whakatane Sharks. Barclay Fort worked really hard in defence and was named player of the day. Sharks won the game 6 – 0.
Awakeri United put in a good effort I their 11th grade 3rd division game against Whakatane Titans, but they just couldn't score! Fearless defence earned Ashlee Jennings player of the day. Titans won the game 5 – 0.
In the 11th grade 1st division, Awakeri Ninjas were at home to Whakatane Town Phoenix. Ninjas came out firing and scored some early goals. Their team play was excellent. Mia Sutton assisted two others to score goals and then put in a good one herself to be named player of the day. The final score was Awakeri Ninjas 9, Whakatane Phoenix 3.
SLH Contracting Awakeri Warriors had a fairly even first half with Saints Dragons in the 13th grade. A good cross from winger Leanna Roebuck set up Isaac Clements for a shot which went in off the post. Kieran Butler had some good attempts too but was thwarted by the very good Saints keeper. However, the Warriors did put in a second and Saints also scored to make the half time score 2 – 1. Elijah Wetting –Davidson came out of goal and scored twice in the second half to clinch the game 4 – 1. Player of the day was Josh Broadmore who did well on the left, combining with Bradley Burr in defence.
In the 7th grade Awakeri Rangers had three great games. Max Mead got their first and only goal of the day in the first game which they won! Rangers lost the next two games, but they all played really well together. The player of the day was Aani Butterworth.
Superior Excavation Awakeri Athletic was the only team with a full turn out in the 7th grade. They shared their players around with the three teams they played against. Their player of the day went to Ash Kelly for awesome attack and defence skills.
Also in the 7th grade, Awakeri Phoenix's first game was against Plains Panthers, a 1 – 0 win with Dominic Rowland scoring the goal. Their next game was against Poroporo Pahau, who won 1 - 0. Their final game was against Whakatane Snappers. It was a one all draw with Jacson Heal the scorer. Player of the day went to Dylan Leech for great attacking play.
