Lots of goals were scored in games involving Awakeri's football teams on Saturday. Many players also proudly wore their club hoodies for the first times, meaning there was a sea of blue at the grounds.
In the 13th grade, SLH Contracting Awakeri Warriors travelled to play Whakatane Intermediate Jets. Warriors came away with a 6 - 0 win. Goals were scored by Bradley Burr, Elijah Wetting-Davidson, Kieran Butler and the player of the day Isaac Clements got a hat trick.
11th grade teams are playing grading rounds. Awakeri United travelled to play Opotiki Magpies Premier team. Opotiki were too strong, winning 6 – 0. Cole Broadmore's endless energy earned him player of the day.
Eastern Bay Curtains 4U Awakeri Ninjas had a home game against Kutarere in the 11th grade. Kutarere put together some good play, but Ninjas were too strong, winning 6 – 0. Mason Nurkka was named player of the day after a hard working game in defence. Kobi Wetting-Davidson was also outstanding, scoring five goals and spraying around some excellent passes.
Awakeri Avengers played the Ohope Makos in the 9th grade and lost 2 - 1. Patch Jones scored the goal for Awakeri and Kieran Robinson got player of the day. He had a great first game of soccer and was fully involved in the game. Patch got an injury in the first few minutes of the second half and was off for the rest of the game so Avengers had to battle on with no subs. They thoroughly enjoyed themselves anyway.
Also in the 9th grade, Awakeri Panthers played Ohope Kraken, losing 0 – 5. Their player of the day was Rhiane Byers.
Awakeri Magic played Plains Wildcats in an 8th grade grading game, running out the winners 6 – 0. Magic played like their name suggested and had excellent support on the sideline. The goals were scored by Alex Whiteman, Aramia Hanlen, Arran Dominick and Ollie Peat. Player of the day went to Aramia Hanlen for excellent attacking skills as well as her goal scoring.
In the 7th grade, Awakeri Mustangs had three wins. Josh Spalding was outstanding, scoring goals and being named player of the day. Blake Heath scored a good goal too, his first ever.
7th grade Awakeri Rangers played their parents first up when another team didn't show up at Warren Park. They then had games with Awakeri Phoenix and Thornton, losing them 0 – 3. Kolton Kerrigan was the player of the day.
Awakeri Athletic drew one and lost two of their 7th grade games. They had lots of fun. Lucy Overdevest was their player of the day for her great work on attack.
Also in the 7th grade, Awakeri Phoenix played Ohope Blue Fins, winning 5-0. The goal scorers were Jacson Heal (2), Jade Mahy (2) and Addison Whiteman. Phoenix then played Awakeri Rangers and won 3-0, with scorers Jade and Jacson. The third game was against Plains Rangers, a 3-0 win with player of the day Jacson scoring all three goals.
