Some of Awakeri's football teams had their last outing of the season on Saturday and the rest have only a game or two left.
In the 13th grade, SLH Contracting Awakeri Warriors were disappointed to win their game against Whakatane Intermediate WI-Fox by default.
Primogrow Awakeri Ninjas beat Whakatane Town Hawks 6 – 2 in the 11th grade 1st division. This division has a fascinating last two weeks in store. The top three teams: Ohope Panthers, Awakeri Ninjas and Opotiki Magpies play each other, with Ohope holding a narrow two point lead from the other two teams. Julien Horn-Christensen was player of the day.
In the 11th grade 3rd division Awakeri United lost 6 – 1 to Saints Tigers. The players of the day were Jamie Hawkes and Cole Broadmore.
Awakeri Panthers played against a strong Whakatane Town Sharks team in the 9th grade. Panthers put in a great effort, but Sharks went on to win 6 – 0. Zoe Laurent's excellent tackling and a good shot at goal earned her player of the day.
Also in the 9th grade, Awakeri Avengers won against the Ohope Kraken 3 - 1. Patch Jones scored two good goals and Tejay Robinson got the other goal. The whole team played really well and shared the player of the day honours.
Awakeri Magic lived up to their name, completing an unbeaten season in the 8th grade. Ohope Orca were excellent competitive opposition. They scored the first goal within minutes of the game commencing. From there on in it was an evenly matched exciting game with both sides keeping the pressure on. The final score was Awakeri Magic 4, Ohope Orca 2. Magic's goals were scored by Alex Whiteman, Arran Dominick, and Christian Smith. Player of the day went to Aramia Hanlen for her determination and consistent attacking play.
The 7th grade season wrapped up for the year at Warren Park. Awakeri Rangers scored in their first game of the day. Flynn Dominick put the ball over the line with the help of his whole team! Despite two losses, Rangers never gave up. This has been their season's motto!
Despite the weather, Superior Excavation Awakeri Athletic enjoyed their last game of soccer in the 7th grade. The players have improved with their soccer skills and confidence in themselves. It was a great team effort, with Wilson Carter named player of the day.
