Awakeri's football teams all enjoyed their first round of scheduled fixtures, after participating in a very successful Bay Day opening tournament the week before.
Awakeri were at home in the 13th grade to Whakatane Intermediate Foxy Feet. The first half was an even affair, with Awakeri going into half time leading 1 – 0, courtesy of a nice Frank Butler goal. The visitors drew level in the second half and scored again to take the win 2 – 1. Kalib Schuler stood out in defence to earn player of the day.
In the 11th grade Awakeri Ninjas were also at home to a strong Whakatane Town Hawks side. The Hawks led 3 – 0 at half time, but Ninjas came back into it after the break. They played well with the impressive Brad Yuill scoring a nice goal. Hawks scored one more to make the final score 4 – 1. Sophie Growden's steadfastness in defence earned her player of the day.
Also in the11th grade the young Awakeri Panthers team played against Whakatane Town Sharks. Panthers held the Sharks scoreless for 24 minutes with amazing defence from their backs. The final score of 6 - 0 didn't reflect the effort and great attitude put in by the Panthers. The player of the day was Callum Cameron. He played well in the backs and the forwards and was always watching the game and anticipating where he needed to be.
Awakeri Magic were lucky to have their 9th grade game with St Joseph's Strikers before the rain set in. It was an evenly matched competition with good team work and effort from both sides. Ollie Peat scored the only goal of the match. Player of the day was a hard decision, in the end it was awarded to Nate Parsons for his tremendous effort and skill during the match overall. The final score was Awakeri Magic 1 St Joseph's Strikers 0.
Awakeri Mustangs won 5 - 3 against Opotiki in the 8th grade. The goal scorers were Jacson Heal, Jaimee-Lee Nuku and Jayden Grindrod. The player of the day was Jacson Heal.
Also in the 8th grade, it was a hard game for Awakeri Athletic, losing to Whakatane Falcons 7 - 1. The player of the day went to Addison Neill for an awesome pass which led to the goal scored by Seth Rowlands.
Awakeri's three 6th grade teams enjoyed their first round of junior framework at Warren Park.
Awakeri Rangers 6th grade had a great morning. They won one game and drew their two other games. The goals scored by Harry Davidson and Ben Overdevest, who was player of the day.
Awakeri Rover did well in their three games, to have two losses and a win. Mason Little scored the goals for Rovers and was named player of the day.
Awakeri Phoenix's first game was against Allandale Ninjas, a win 3-1. Joshua Jennings scored two goals and Addison Whiteman one. Phoenix then played Kawerau Comets and won 5-0 with Joshua Jennings scoring one goal, Addison Whiteman scoring three and Anais Spalding scoring one goal. Their last game was against St. Joseph's Silver. It was a 1-1 draw with Joshua scoring the goal. Player of the day went to Anais Spalding for scoring her first goal of the season.
