Awakeri's football teams were involved in some very high scoring games on Saturday.
Awakeri Warriors had a good first half in their 13th grade game against Ohope and led at the break with Ollie Fort scoring from a corner. However, the home team came out firing and scored three quick goals in the second half, before Elijah Wetting got one back. The scoring then see-sawed, with Wetting scoring a nice long range goal for Warriors. The final score was 6 – 3 to Ohope. Isak Tootell earned player of the day with some good saves in goals. Others to shine included Mia Sutton and Phoebe Carter.
In the 11th grade grading rounds, Awakeri Ninjas had a convincing 6 – 0 win against Opotiki Magpies. The Ninjas team is starting to string some good passing together. Brad Yuill was brilliant on the right wing with some great crossing. Player of the day was Cody Parsons. He was strong on the ball, scored a goal from well outside the box and as always was full of energy.
Awakeri Panthers were home to St Joseph Swords in the 11th grade grading rounds. The young Panthers team played well. Their player of the day was Tylah Bateson for her great effort and determination on defence.
Awakeri Magic played an excellent, hard fought game to narrowly beat the Ohope Mako team in the 9th grade. Awakeri was down to the wire as far as just having enough players available to play. Ohope had plenty of subs to put fresh legs on the field. Ohope scored first and from then on, it was all on, with both teams trying for goals and keeping the pressure on. The final score was Awakeri Magic 4, Ohope Mako 3. Supporters from both sides commented on what a great game between them it was. Callum Hathaway was named player of the day for his efforts as goalie and ball skills on the field. The goal scorers were Ollie Peat (3) and Nate Parsons.
Awakeri Mustangs met the Plains All Stars in the 8th grade. Mustangs were too strong and recorded a 6 – 0 win. Maddie Baker and Lila McDonnell both scored their first ever goals in football and shared the player of the day award.
Also in the 8th grade, Awakeri Athletic had a loss to St Joseph's Sparks; the final score was 4 - 7. A great game played by all. For Awakeri, two goals were scored by both Joshua Spalding and Seth Rowlands. Seth Rowlands was player of the day.
In the 6th grade Awakeri Rangers had some entertaining games. They won one, drew one and lost one. Their player of the day was Braxton Semmens for his great defending and ball skills.
Also in the 6th grade, Awakeri Phoenix played WTAFC Avengers and won 2-0 with Josh Jennings scoring the two goals. In their second game they played WTAFC Strikers, winning 3-1 with Addison Whiteman scoring all three goals. In their last game they played WTAFC Snappers, a 4-1 win. Their goals were scored by Asher Spalding (2), Cohen Smith and Addison Whiteman. Player of the day went to Cohen, who made a huge improvement!
Awakeri Rovers also made a massive improvement in their 6th grade games. All the kids played really well and are showing a lot of confidence on the field. They played Whakatane Snappers in the first game, a 4-1 loss. The second game was Whakatane Dolphins, a 2-1 win. Thirdly was Ohope Avengers, 1-0 to Ohope. Rovers' player of the day went to Coby Rutledge for showing enthusiasm in his play.
