Awakeri’s football teams played with frost still on the ground on Saturday.
Awakeri Warriors were at Whakatane Foxy Feet in the 13th grade. They played a good first half with lots of passing and shots on goal saved. At half time the score was 1-0 to the Whakatane Intermediate team. However the cold weather and a loss of composure in the second half cost the Warriors dearly, with Foxy Feet winning 6 - 0. Player of the day was James Shailer.
In the 11th grade Blue division Awakeri Ninjas beat Ohope Kraken 5 – 1, with Kobi Wetting scoring all the goals for Awakeri. Ryan Somerville’s good defence earned him player of the day.
Awakeri Panthers won their 11th grade White game against Kutarere by default unfortunately.
In the 9th grade, Awakeri Magic played against Whakatane Makos in a game which started off as looking to be another evenly matched competition. The first goal was scored in the first twelve minutes by Awakeri Magic's Alex Whiteman, Whakatane quickly followed to even the score. After a few moments of pressure from the opposition, Awakeri turned the tables and dominated the rest of the game as far as putting pressure on Whakatane. The final score: Awakeri Magic 3, Whakatane Makos 1. The goals were scored by Alex, Nate Parsons and Callum Hathaway. Player of the day went to Isla Thompson for her excellent efforts as supporting player during the game.
Awakeri Athletic played Kawerau Avengers in the 8th grade, The game was a great even tussle with Ash Kelly breaking the deadlock with a great goal mid way through the second half, but in the final minute Kawerau managed to sneak one past the defence to even the score 1 - 1. Player of the day was Wilson Carter for his awesome defence .
Awakeri Mustangs lost 2-0 in the 8th grade to Kawerau Northern Star, player of day was Jayden Grindrod.
Awakeri Phoenix’s first game in the 6th grade was against Plains Pukekos, a 4 – 1 win. Josh Jennings (2), Asher Spalding and JJ Keepa the scorers. Their second game was against WTA Strikers. Phoenix won 3 - 1, the goal scorers were Addison Whiteman, Cohen Smith and Josh. Their last game was against WTA Snappers, a 2 – 1 loss, with Addison scoring the goal. Their player of the day went to Josh Jennings for great goal scoring.
Also in the 6th grade, Awakeri Rovers won their first game 4 – 0, drew the second 0 - 0 and lost the third 4 – 1. The player of the day went to everybody because they all played well.
Awakeri Rangers certainly had a cold start to their 6th grade morning. Once the kids defrosted, they played really well. They won two games and drew the other. Braxton Semmens scored four goals, Max Mead and Kolton Kerrigan scored. Kolton’s great defence and attacking game earned him the player of day. All seven members played really well together.
