Two of Awakeri's football teams knocked over unbeaten teams at the weekend to go equal tops of their respective tables.
In the 11th grade top division Awakeri Ninjas beat Whakatane Hawks 3 – 2 to go level with them in the standings. Ninjas had their best game of the season. They were 2 nil down at half time against Whakatane Hawks who were unbeaten for the season. They never gave up and scored 3 goals in the final quarter to win it. There were two players of the day. Leon Mahy was brilliant in goal and saved a direct in the first half, that was struck very well, to keep us in the game. Ryan Somerville worked tirelessly in defence, playing his best game of the season.
In the 8th grade Awakeri Mustangs beat unbeaten Whakatane Falcons 4 – 3 in a thriller. The Mustangs played an excellent passing game to secure the win, with Maddie Baker player of the day.
In other games, Awakeri Magic played Whakatane Mako in an exciting 9th grade game that was full on from the start. Awakeri started the scoring but Whakatane quickly came back to score as well. Awakeri then dominated the match with Ollie Peat pulling out all the stops to continue upping the goal total. Whakatane tried to keep up but the entire Awakeri team made this a memorable last game of the season. The final score: Awakeri Magic 6, Whakatane Mako 2. Player of the day went to the entire team on the field – Ryan Lambert, Ollie Peat (who scored all six goals!), Aramia Hanlen, Nate Parsons, Christian Smith, Tyler Wardlaw, Alex Whiteman and Aaron Best. It was a great note for Magic to finish their season on.
Awakeri Athletic had a win 3 - 1 in their 8th grade game against the Ohope Bluefins. Two goals were scored by Joshua Spalding and one by Blake Heath. Player of the day went to Lucy Overdevest for her amazing tackling and attack on the ball.
Tejay Robinson scored the only goal for Awakeri Panthers in their 11th grade 6 – 1 loss to St Josephs.
Awakeri Rangers had a great end to the season in the 6th grade. Their first game was an 'invitational'. The second game against Ohope was 0 – 0, a great game from both sides. Player of the day went to the whole team for their fantastic effort.
Also in the 6th grade, Awakeri Phoenix played St Josephs, who won 2 – 1, with Addison Whiteman scoring the Awakeri goal. Their second game was against Allandale. Phoenix won 1 - 0 with Addison scoring the only goal.
