Awakeri's football teams had rather muddy conditions to deal with on Saturday but some very good football was played.
Awakeri Ninjas were at home to Kutarere in the 11th grade. Ninjas were too strong for the visitors, but both teams enjoyed their game. Kaleb Grindrod's good runs up the left and early crosses earned him player of the day. It was good to see Ben Peat scoring one of his goals from a nice Brad Yuill corner.
Also in the 11th grade, the young Awakeri Panthers team played a strong Ohope side, losing 6 - 0. Tejay Robinson was player of the day, with his good footwork and attacking skills to the fore.
Awakeri Magic played against Plains Panthers in a 9th grade game that was dominated by the Magic team. Plains Panthers played well and showed skill but were unable to score or keep the Awakeri team at bay. Magic had many opportunities at goal and managed to get some past the goalie to grab a 4 – 0 win. The goals were scored by Callum Hathaway, Nate Parsons and Alex Whiteman. Player of the day went to Alex Whiteman for his skilful play and efforts during the game.
In the 8th grade Awakeri Mustangs won 7 - 4 against newcomers Kawerau Avengers. This game was closer than the score showed. There was some very good football by both teams in an end to end game. Mustangs' player of the day was Fergus Rowe.
Awakeri Athletic played Kawerau Northern Star in the 8th grade. It was a really good game. Athletic's player of the day was Blake Heath, for his awesome hustle and defence.
At Warren Park in the 6th grade, Awakeri Phoenix played WTAC Strikers, losing 2 - 1 with Olivia Hathaway scoring the goal. In their second game they played WTAC Snappers, losing 1 - 0. In their third game they played WTAC Dolphins and won 1 - 0. Joshua Jennings scored the goal was named player of the day.
Awakeri Rangers had a fantastic day in the 6th grade. They were down to five players with a few off sick but they all played very well. Rangers won their first game 1 - 0, the second 2 – 0 and the final game 4 - 0. Max Mead scored a hat trick in the last game earning him the very deserving 'player of the day'. Ayla Norman scored a couple of goals too and Harry Davidson, Braxton Semmens and Kolton Kerrigan worked hard in defence.
It was another great day for Awakeri Rovers in the 6th grade. Their first game was 2 – 2, the second 0 - 0 and the third was 1 - 0 to Awakeri. Their player of the day went to Dylan Leech for a massive improvement, scoring all three goals!
