Awakeri's football teams were pleased to be back in action after the holiday break.
In the 13th grade, Awakeri Warriors were away at St Joseph's Dragons. Awakeri played well and got an early lead. Ollie Fort scored with a brilliant header from an Elijah Wetting cross, for the first goal. Elijah then scored himself and when Frank Butler scored it looked like a comfortable victory for the Warriors. However Saints came back with a couple of goals in the second half to keep the game interesting. Warriors held on to win 3 – 2. Teigan Nolan was player of the day, with Bonnie-Marie Wetting also having a good game.
In the 11th grade top division (Blue), Awakeri Ninjas played Ohope Kraken. Awakeri passed the ball around very well to control the game. They led 1 – 0 after Brad Yuill crossed the ball to Ben Peat, who scored nicely. However, it wasn't till late in the game when further goals started arriving. A good move saw Kobi Wetting feed Ben Peat who put Patrick Jones in to score. Patrick scored a second and Kobi Wetting rounded out the goals to earn a 4 – 0 win. Joseph Spalding was a rock in defence, with Leon Mahy also showing strength at the back. This Saturday Ninjas look forward to matching it against Whakatane Hawks again, the only team they have not beaten.
Awakeri Panthers opened the scoring in their 11th grade White division game against Plains Wanderers. Barclay Fort showed good skills to put Panthers in front. However, Wanderers were too strong in the end and took the game 7 – 1. Players of the day were Rhiane Byers and Cullen Brown for their awesome vision and looking ahead.
In the 9th grade, Awakeri Magic drew 1 – 1 with Ohope Makos. It was a really good game between two evenly matched teams. The speedy, hard-working Tyler Wardlaw scored for Awakeri, but Ohope came back to even things up. Player of the day was goalkeeper Ryan Lambert.
Awakeri Mustangs had a good local derby against Awakeri Athletic in the 8th grade. The final result was 4-2 to the Mustangs. Their player of the day was Jacson Heal. Athletic had a lot of players missing, so they had no subs. Joshua Spalding was their player of the day for his excellent goal scoring.
Awakeri Rangers had a great morning of soccer in the 6th grade. They won one game and lost one, with nice goals scored by Kolton Kerrigan, Ben Overdevest and player of the day Harry Davidson. Braxton Yardley and Ayla Norman did their bit with some excellent runs.
Awakeri Phoenix played Awakeri Rangers in their first 6th grade match, winning 1 - 0 with Addison Whiteman scoring the only goal of the game. In their second game Phoenix played Whakatane Town AFC Avengers, winning 3 – 0, with Addison scoring two goals and JJ Keepa scoring as well. Their player of the day went to Asher Spalding for great attacking play.
