30th June 2018

Awakeri’s older football teams did not notch up many wins on Saturday, but they had some hard fought contests.
In a see-sawing game, Awakeri Warriors lost 3 - 4 at home to Ohope Sharks in the 13th grade. Player of the day Ollie Fort scored twice and Elijah Wetting once for Awakeri.
Awakeri Ninjas started strongly and took the lead in their 11th Grade Blue game against a well drilled Whakatane Town Hawks team. A great long shot from Kobi Wetting opened the scoring, however Hawks were too strong in the end, winning the game 4 - 1.  Joseph Spalding had a strong defensive game and Ashley Jennings did good work on the left flank. Player of the day was Leon Mahy in goal, who had to make some brave saves off the feet of attackers.
In the 11th Grade White division, Opotiki Magpies played with world cup inspiration against Awakeri Panthers, taking out the game 6 – 0.  It was great to see excellent sportsmanship from both teams. Rhianna Rowe’s skills saw her named player of the day.
Awakeri Mustangs had a comfortable win in the 8th grade against Ohope Bluefins, 7 – 1. The team played very well as a unit and shared player of the day.
Also in the 8th grade, Awakeri Athletic went down 5 – 1 to Opotiki Magpies. Ash Kelly was player of the day for his excellent defensive effort.
At Warren Park, the 6th grade teams had their three games each. Awakeri Phoenix played Plains Strikers, a comfortable win with goals scored by Addison Whiteman, Asher Spalding and Josh Jennings. Their next game was against Awakeri Rovers, who won 2 - 1 with Asher the scorer for Phoenix. In their final game they played Allandale, a 2 – 2 draw. Again player of the day Asher Spalding was the scorer. Awakeri Rovers’ player of the day was Kaylee Howson.
Awakeri Rangers had another great morning of football. They were down to five players but everyone played like absolute stars. Rangers won two games and lost one (with an own goal whoops). The goals were scored by Ben Overdevest, and Harry Davidson with a hat-trick. Player of the day was Braxton Semmens for an outstanding effort in all games.
