Awakeri's football teams enjoyed good results and exciting games in their last week before the holiday break.
In the 11th grade Blue division Awakeri Ninjas had a thriller with Whakatane Town Sharks. Kaleb Grindrod opened the scoring with a good goal. Sharks came back with two goals from corners, one going in direct. Ben Peat scored the equaliser and then with only minutes left he also scored the winner. Player of the day for Ninjas was Ashlee Jennings.
In the 11th grade White, Awakeri Panthers and Saints Swords had an amazing score-line, finishing at 6 – 5 to the Swords! It was a very even game, 3 – 1 to Swords at half time. Some players had to switch from being defenders to attackers and they adjusted well. Nathan Reihana-Asquith and Ryan Ashton were very busy in their turns as goalkeeper; player of the day was Charlize Butler who thwarted a number of attacks. Scorers for Panthers were: Tejay Robinson, Barclay Fort, Cullen Brown, Rhianna Rowe and Ryan Ashton. Entertainer of the day was Cullen, who did the splits after scoring his goal!
Awakeri Magic played against St Joseph's Strikers in the 9th grade on a miserable grey morning, and suffered their first loss of the season. Magic took a while to get into the game. St Jo's team were relentless in their attack in the first half. Awakeri goalie, Callum Hathaway, was kept extremely busy fending off the repeated attacks at goal. Saints did put away one of their chances. During the second half, Awakeri finally got themselves together and turned the tables as far as keeping constant pressure on the opposition's goal. St Joseph's held out to win the game. The final score: St Joseph's Strikers 1, Awakeri Magic 0.
Awakeri Mustangs had no subs for their 8th grade game against Allandale Strikers. Two goals from Jade Mahy and one from Jacson Heal earned a 3 – 1 win for Mustangs.
Also in the 8th grade, Awakeri Athletic played Plains All Stars at the Edgecumbe Domain. Athletic played really well as a team and everybody contributed. A hat trick from Seth Rowlands and goals from Blake Heath and Wilson Carter gave Athletic a 5 – 0 win. Lucy Overdevest received a well-deserved player of the day.
In the 6th grade, Awakeri Phoenix first played Awakeri Rovers, winning 2 - 1 with Addy Whiteman and Asher Spalding scoring. Their second game was against WTAC Avengers, a 5 - 0 win with Addy (2), Cohen Smith (2) and Asher the scorers. In the third game Phoenix played WTAC Strikers, losing 3 - 2 with Addy and Asher scoring a goal each.
Awakeri Rovers also had a game with their parents, because an opposition team didn't show up. It was a lot of fun. Tanner Willetts was their player of the day.
Awakeri Rangers had another great morning of soccer in the 6th grade, they won two games and drew one. Player of the day was Braxton Yardley with his last minute goal to score the winner against St Jo's. It was his first goal of the season as well.
