There were some great results for Awakeri's football teams on Saturday, with two teams recording their first wins of the season.
SLH Contracting Awakeri Warriors hosted Saints Dragons in the 13th grade. It was a competitive game throughout. Jamie Hawkes showed good sportsmanship by playing for the opposition until their eleventh player turned up. Mia Sutton and Bonnie-Marie Wetting did well on the left flank. Shaun Snow and Isak Tootell shared the goalkeeping and kept a clean sheet. Kalib Schuler also shone in defence. A hat-trick from player of the day Elijah Wetting and a goal from Ollie Fort earned Warriors a 4 – 0 win.
In the 11th grade, Awakeri Ninjas put in their best all round performance of the season so far, beating Ohope Kraken 6 – 0. Leon Mahy was player of the day. The game was very tight in the first twenty minutes and Leon made some good saves in goal to keep Ohope out. He then played solidly in defence in the second half.
Also in the 11th grade, Awakeri Panthers were at home to Kutarere and had their first win of the season. Panthers passed the ball around really well, the excellent team work leading to quite a few goals, in fact the final score was 10 - 5. Rhiane Byers scored Panthers' first goal of the season. She set the tone, then Tejay Robinson scored four goals and Barclay Fort scored five! It was a massive boost for the players, with the focus on the team not the individuals.
Awakeri Magic played against Kawerau Sports in a hard fought, highly competitive 9th grade match. The first half was dominated by a strong Kawerau team that tested the unbeaten Awakeri team's defence. Awakeri managed to score the first goal during the first fifteen minutes of the half. Kawerau equalised early into the second half and put the pressure onto Awakeri's goalie. Magic managed to hold out and score one more goal before fulltime. The final score was Awakeri Magic 2, Kawerau Sports 1. Both Awakeri goals were scored by player of the day Ollie Peat.
In the 8th grade, Awakeri Athletic had their first win of the season, 7 – 1 against Ohope Bluefins. Awakeri's goals were scored by Joshua Spalding, Seth Rowlands and Blake Heath. Player of the day went to Ryan Cobb for setting up numerous goals, and great team work.
The Awakeri Mustangs lost to a very well drilled Whakatane Falcons 6 – 4 also in the 8th grade. Unfortunately Mustangs lost Jade Mahy early to a serious injury when she was kicked in the knee. The team will certainly miss Jade's determination. Ava MacDonald was player of the day.
Awakeri Rangers had another great day at soccer in the 6th grade at Warren Park, with the weather finally feeling like winter! They played three games and won three games! The goals were scored by Max Mead, Ayla Norman, and Kolton Kerrigan. Player of the day was Braxton Yardley who played like an absolute star.
In their three 6th grade games Awakeri Rovers had a good day, losing the first two games 1 – 0, but winning the third game 2 – 0. Rovers only had four players so the boys got a good run! Their player of the day was Tanner Willets.
Awakeri Phoenix played Whakatane Town AFC in the 6th grade, winning 1 – 0, with Asher Spalding getting the only goal. Their next game was against Allandale, a 1 – 0 win with Addison Whiteman the scorer. In their final game Phoenix played Whakatane Avengers. It was a 3 – 0 win with Addison scoring all three goals. The player of the day went to JJ Keepa.
