With inspiration from the Football World Cup starting off, Awakeri's soccer teams enjoyed their games on Saturday, their goal keepers to the fore.
Awakeri Get Fresh Sharks had tough game in the 11th grade premier division, against the Whakatane Magpies, in front of a large vocal group of onlookers on Saturday. Once again Sharks played a game of two halves, starting strongly in the first half but allowing the Magpies to come back in the second. The game finishing in a 2 - 2 draw. The goal scorers for the Sharks were Sean Boots Young and Quest Tipping. The player of the day was awarded to goal keeper Lucas Schlepers, who England might want to take a look at!
A heroic goalkeeping performance from Lachlan Butler could not keep out a determined Te Teko team who ended two goals up over the Da Silva Autos Awakeri Dragons in the 9th grade premier division on Saturday. The supporters were treated to fine display from Butler, highlighted by a double save at close quarters. It was not all one way traffic, with Finn Spod working hard in midfield to create chances for strikers Centreece Baker and Liam McCormick. Strong runs from Cody Bragg kept the Te Teko defenders busy, but the Dragons couldn't get the final pass to stick. With time running out, Awakeri launched more attacks and the opposition managed to score a game-clinching goal.
Bay Milking Equipment Awakeri Incredibles played Ohope Dynamites in the 8th grade premier division, losing 9 - 0. Kyla McGuire was the player of the day. She was excellent in defence, putting pressure on the attackers and diverting goals.
Performance Zone Awakeri Wild Cats had another fantastic battle in the 8th grade 1st division, against Whakatane Panthers. Wild Cats lost 2 - 1 but the parents and coach are loving seeing the girls get stuck in and giving it their all. Taryn Forbes was outstanding on defence for Wild Cats, and without her things could have been very different. Sophie Lawrence and Stacie Martin, who are new to the team, are really trying hard. Tara van Beekhuizen scored the goal and had a strong all round game.
In the 7th grade, Private Asset Management Awakeri Aces started slowly against K-Town Cruisers. Aces put in a better second half, with player of the day Reaf Bruce making some fantastic saves in goal. He was ably assisted by Lilly Du Toit, who was also in good form. Cruisers won the game 7 - 0.
The Awakeri Comets 7th grade game against Ohope Stormtroopers was a very well matched affair, with both teams having plenty of opportunities. Unfortunately for Awakeri, a goal in each half meant that Ohope came out as 2 - 0 winners. Player of the day Jake Boyce played fearlessly in the Comets' goal, saving a number of good attempts by Ohope. At the other end of the field the Comets played some good challenging football and were unlucky not to score.
Awakeri Warriors played Ohope Mustangs in the 7th grade. Zalea Tipping was excellent in goal, keeping the score to 1 - nil at half time. Warriors had some good shots at goal, with the whole team attacking and defending well. Caleb Keightley was the player of day.
