The first win of the season for the Bay Milking Equipment Awakeri Incredibles was the highlight for Awakeri's soccer teams on Saturday. Incredibles played Te Teko Taniwha in the 8th grade premier division, winning 4 - 1. Korben Wilson scored a hat trick, with Zoe Bennett the other scorer. Caleb Marshall was the player of the day for outstanding improvement in his soccer skills.
In the 11th grade premier division, Awakeri Get Fresh Sharks led against the strong Saints team in the first half, but Saints came back late to grab a 4 - 2 win. Player of the day Fletcher Forsyth and Quest Tipping scored the Sharks goal. Jack Du Toit and Ruby Thompson also had strong games.
O'Hagan's Awakeri Magic played Opotiki Cobras in the 11th grade 1st division. Magic had a sound second half, with Georgia Renshaw, Toni Campbell and player of the day Jaspreet Dharmet all doing well. Cobras won the game 4 - 1, Liam Wilkinson was the scorer for Magic.
Da Silva Autos Awakeri Silver Dragons met Otakiri Raiders in a thrilling 9th grade premier division game. Otakiri ran out the winners with a goal late in the second half. Despite Liam McCormack's strong efforts on attack, rattling the post early with a great drive and going close on a number of occasions, the Dragons could not extend to more goals after a well struck equaliser by Cody Bragg. Emma Paine and Isaiah Davidson battled well after picking up early knocks and Ryan Magee won player of the day through his no nonsense tackling and astute positional play. With just a touch more luck in front of goal, the Dragons will look for early victory in a catch up game on Friday.
The Performance Zone Awakeri Wildcats played Allandale in the 8th grade 1st division and went down 2 - 0. Player of the day went to Emily Julian who played a very aggressive hard working game. Crystal Marriner and Taryn Forbes played well on defence for the Wildcats.
In a 7th grade club derby, Awakeri Warriors and Awakeri Comets fought out a competitive 0 - 0 draw. Logan Calder went closest to scoring for the Warriors, while
Kevin Paulsen was the likeliest for Comets. Player of the day for the Warriors was Zalea Tipping, who defended mightily in goal. Cody Cook was player of the day for Comets for his tireless tackling and a couple of great runs up the wing.
In the 7th grade Private Asset Management Awakeri Aces played Opotiki Vampires. Aces played well, in a closely fought game, eventually going down 3 - 0. Tayla Jones was player of the day and Caden Laurent also had a good game.
Awakeri Dolphins lost to Edgecumbe Dragons 2 - 0 in the 6th grade. Player of the day went to Liam White for his great attack play. Blake Hermansen defended well in goal for Dolphins too.
Awakeri Jets were out muscled in their 6th grade game against Paroa Rockets, going down 6 - 1. Player of the day was awarded to Cambell Julian for his awesome goal and brilliant goalkeeping efforts in the 2nd half. Isaac Clement and Oliver Forsyth also had good all round games for the Jets.
Also in the 6th grade, Awakeri Angels suffered a 5 - 0 defeat to Te Teko Korimako. Olivia Sheaff and Sadie van Beekhuizen played well in an evenly matched first half. Te Teko dominated the second half and good goalkeeping again by Juliet Findlay prevented a drubbing. The player of the day was Alex Robbie.
