Following on from the very enjoyable Bay Day last weekend, Awakeri's soccer teams had some close games in their first round of the leagues.
The 8th grade 1st division Performance Zone Awakeri Wild Cats had a great start to the season with a 3 - 2 win over Whakatane Panthers. Wild Cats had three goals by half time, with some great balls down the line by Tara Van Beekhuizen and Emily Julian finding Renske Brabant-Weitkamp and Sarah Sheaff, who attacked the goal. Whakatane came back in the second half, but Wild Cats hung on. Great defence by Shayna Penberth earned her player of the day. The Wild Cats' scorers were Emily, Renske and Tara.
The Awakeri Get Fresh Sharks had a tough encounter with Saints on Saturday in the 11th grade premier division. The game was played at a very fast pace, with both teams playing some exceptional soccer. Awakeri Sharks defended well and had some good strikes at the Saints goal. The final score was 2 -nil to Saints, after they were able to break Awakeri's defence. Quest Tipping was named player of the day for his never-say-die attitude. He was denied a goal by the goal post! Daniel Gow also played well and Sam Cook was solid in goal.
In the 11th grade 1st division, O'Hagan's Awakeri Magic had a good first half against Whakatane Magic, but ran out of steam. Liam Wilkinson was Awakeri's player of the day with a strong game. Whakatane won the battle of the Magics 3 - 0.
Awakeri Dolphins played Ohope Diamonds in the 6th grade. The two teams were closely matched. Beth Wilson struck the ball very well. Liam White, Thomas Wessels and player of the day Regan Henderson each came very close to scoring goals. Cody Hutchings and Jack Elliot defended well in goal. There was lots of sideline support for Dolphins in their first game of the season. Ohope won 1 - 0.
Awakeri Aces had a similarly good game in their 6th grade match up with Kawerau Eels. Olivia Sheaff was their player of the day, with Lucy Knott and Sadie van Beekhuizen also playing very well. Eels won the game 1 - 0.
Also in the 6th grade, Awakeri Jets played Kawerau Teenie Neenies. The score was 2 - 0 to Awakeri. Goal scorers were Caleb Muggeridge and Kieron Butler. Jets' player of the day was Isaac Clement for his determination and persistent effort.
In the 7th grade, Awakeri Aces and Comets were pitted against each other in a close contest. Both teams created several chances, but it took a last minute goal from Ethan Patterson to break the deadlock, making a 1 - 0 win for Comets. Daniel Brown's hard working attitude saw him named player of the day for the Comets, while Ezra Young gained those honours for the Aces.
The Awakeri Warriors did well in their 7th grade game against Otakiri, the result a 1 - 1 draw. Thomas Lawn was the Warriors player of the day, and Ryan Mapu showed he has plenty of skill too.
In the 8th grade premier division, Bay Milking Equipment Awakeri Incredibles didn't really get going against Whakatane Force, losing comprehensively. Noah Parkes made some great saves in goal though, and was named player of the day.
The Da Silva Autos Awakeri Dragons were sunk by a late goal when they played Te Teko Mako in the 9th grade premier division. Player of the day Cody Dakin looked to have earned Dragons a draw with his goal, but Mako's late winner got them a 2 - 1 win. Emma Paine impressed by battling on when injured.
