The first win of the season for Awakeri Magic in the 11th grade was the highlight
for Awakeri's football teams on Saturday.
O'Hagan's Awakeri Magic played Otakiri in the 11th grade 1st division. Otakiri
dominated the first half and had a number of attempts at goal, but were unable
to capitalise on their possession. At half time it was nil all. The start of
the second half saw the Magic lift their game. Nicole Theobald made a run through,
passed it to Jaspreet Dharmet who put it nicely past the keeper. Fifteen minutes
later Theobald put one away herself. Despite dogged determination by Otakiri,
who got one back late in the game, Magic played as a team and hung on for their
2 - 1 win. The player of the day was Petrie Rautenbach who played at her very
best. However the whole team deserved the accolade.
In the 11th grade premier division, the Awakeri Get Fresh Sharks went down in
their final game of the season 1 - 0 to the Whakatane Magpies. It was a game
of missed opportunities. Sharks dominated the first half with only great saves
from the Magpies keeper and the wood of the cross bar keeping out several strikes
at goal. The winning goal by the Magpies came late in the second half, from
a corner kick. With only minutes remaining the Sharks couldn't strike back.
Player of the day Daniel Gow was once again fantastic in defence. Quest Tipping
also played a good game even though he was suffering from the flu.
In the 8th grade premier division, Bay Milking Equipment Awakeri Incredibles
were short of players for their game against Ohope. Incredibles held out well
in the first half, with some good positional play, but Ohope eventually took
the game 7 - 0. Nathan Howard was named player of the day.
Performance Zone Awakeri Wild Cats had another good win in the 8th grade 1st
division, beating Ohope 4 - 0. The player of the day was Stacie Martin, who
has shown commitment at practice and during the game. The scorers were Emily
Julian (2), Sarah Sheaff, and Tara van Beekhuizen. Good positional play and
the ability to score goals have the Wild Cats playing with a lot of confidence.
Awakeri Warriors played Allandale Rovers in the 7th grade. It was a good game
with the Warriors team working together, passing the ball and scoring some good
goals. The goal scorers were Zalea Tipping (3) and player of the day Caleb Keightley,
who scored his first goal and narrowly missed another. The final score was 4
- 0.
The Awakeri Comets put up a great fight against the unbeaten Saints Crusaders
in their 7th grade match. Crusaders scored twice in the first half with well
taken goals, although goalie Awakeri Cody Cook was unlucky with the second,
as he stopped the initial shot but the Crusaders forward was able to follow
up and score from the rebound. In the second half the Comets began attacking
straight from the whistle and were the much stronger team, pinning the Crusaders
back in their own half for much of the time. Kevin Paulsen was rewarded with
an excellent individual goal after earlier efforts had been saved, gone over
the bar and hit the post. When Crusaders did get the ball into the Awakeri half,
they were stopped by some good chasing back and tackling by the whole team,
with player of the day Ben White making a couple of important saving tackles
when he was the last defender. Despite further attempts on goal, the Comets
were unable to score again and Crusaders ended up 2 - 1 winners. It was a very
exciting game that was enjoyed very much by players and supporters on both sides.
Also in the 7th grade, Private Asset Management Awakeri Aces had a good close
game with Otakiri. Three late goals saw the final score 4 - 0 to Otakiri. Taylor
Skipps was player of the day for Aces, with Caden Laurent, Ezra Young and defender
Lilly du Toit having strong games as well.
Late goals also undid Awakeri Angels in their 6th grade game against Allandale.
The Angels played very well in their last game of the season and looked like
getting a 0 - 0 draw. However, Allandale scored twice to grab a 2 - 0 win. Lucy
Knott was player of the day. She was well supported by Corisa Johnston and Alex
Robbie.
