Awakeri's soccer teams were pleased to be back into action after the holidays and there were some exciting contests.
The Awakeri Sharks played Te Teko Tuna in the 11th grade premier division on Saturday. Excellent passing and team work by the Sharks created some fantastic goals. The final score was 7-nil to the Sharks. The goal scorers were: Quest Tipping, with a hat-trick, Sean Young, Justin Perkins, Dillon Murray and Jack du Toit. The player of the day went to Justin Perkins, who passed well and had a good all round game.
O'Hagan Mortgages Awakeri Magic had a fantastic game as a team in their 11th grade 1st division clash with Kawerau Tigers. Magic were down to eight players, but those that were there played with grit and determination. After about five minutes, the combination of Nicole Theobald and Katie White managed to get the ball into the opposition goal box. Several shots were blocked but Katie managed to slot it away, putting the Magic 1 - 0 up. However, fatigue caught up with the team and in the end Magic lost 4 - 1. There was some very strong defending by the whole team, in particular Felicity Klein Ovink, Haylee Calder and Keely Forbes, who subsequently got a well deserved Player of the Day award.
In the 9th grade premier division Da Silva Autos Awakeri Dragons played the strong Ohope Thistle side. Dragons started strongly. Cody Bragg scored an early goal, with a good run from the midfield followed by a strong shot. Thistle came back and took out the game 5 - 1 in the end. Emma Paine was Dragons' player of the day with a high energy performance and some good marking. Liam McCormick's runs down the flanks also caught the eye.
A strong first half was also the story for Bay Milking Equipment Awakeri Incredibles in their 8th grade premier division match with Saints Rebels. Incredibles keeper Korben Wilson scored an unusual goal, directly from his clearance and into the Saints goal! Robbie Perkinson's excellent defence earned him player of the day.
There was a hugely exciting 7th grade game between Private Asset Management Awakeri Aces and Ohope Stormtroopers. The game was even, 0 - 0 at half time. Ohope got a quick goal after the break, but so did Aces. Ohope then looked to have won it with a late goal, but Aces replied again to grab a 2 - 2 draw. The whole Aces team was named player of the day, with Ezra Young and Caden Laurent the goal scorers.
The Comets had a very exciting game against Otakiri Pukekos in the 7th grade. Otakiri took the lead, but Awakeri equalized when Ben White ran half the length of the pitch before firing into the corner of the goal. Otakiri scored again before half-time to lead 2-1 at the break. In the second half, Awakeri started very well and were rewarded with a second equalizer when a long throw by Cody Cook found Kevin Paulsen, who turned and shot past the goalie to score. The Comets were unlucky not to take the lead when player of the day Ella Jones had a good shot saved. There were plenty of chances to win for both sides, but it was Otakiri that scored the winner, with a good individual goal a couple of minutes from time.
Also in the 7th grade, Awakeri Warriors played Ohope Dolphins and lost 3 nil. It was a hard fought match with good defending and a couple of shots at goal by the Warriors. Logan Calder and Ryan Mapu played well in goal, with Caleb Keightley and Zalea Tipping attacking well. A top game from Thomas Lawn earned him player of the day.
Awakeri Dolphins lost to Whakatane Phoenix 4 nil in the 6th grade. The player of the day was Cody Hutchings, who defended outstandingly.
Also in the 6th grade, Private Asset Management Awakeri Jets played the Ohope All Stars. Goals from player of the day Caden and Jamie Julian brought the Jets a 2 - 1 win.
Awakeri Angels had a fun and energetic 6th grade game against Paroa Jets. Paroa started with a fantastic early goal, but the girls bounced back well to play an evenly matched first half, finishing 2 - 1 at the break after a lovely goal from Sadie van Beekhuizen. The whole Angels team competed well and both teams created chances but Paroa made the most of theirs, winning 5 - 1. Angels' player of the day was Ayla Rowe for her efforts to get involved all over the field.
