Good results for some of their youngest teams was the highlight
for the Awakeri Football Club on Saturday.
Awakeri Dolphins played Hakuna Matata Transfields in the 6th grade. Dolphins
won 2 - 0, scoring their first goals and win for this season. Thomas Wessells
was Dolphins' player of the day; he used his excellent dribbling skills to advantage.
Ethan Forbes and Regan Henderson scored one goal each.
Sadie van Beekhuizen's two goals earned Awakeri Angels a 2 - 0 win in the 6th
grade against Rangitaiki Rippers. Alex Robbie and Ayla Rowe were also in top
form for the Angels.
Also in the 6th grade, Private Asset Management Awakeri Jets won 3 - 1 against
James Street Dragons. It was another great team effort from the Jets, with Kaleb
Muggeridge (2) and Keiron Butler the two goal scorers. The player of the day
was awarded to Kaia Skipps for her continued enthusiasm and effort and Oliver
Forsyth for a great effort in goal for his first game this season.
The Awakeri Comets were away to Allandale in the 7th grade, and had a great
game winning 4 - 0. Ethan Patterson opened the scoring, and then Kevin Paulsen
added two more before half time. In the second half, the game was more even
and Awakeri had to do some good defending. Player of the day Ben White made
some good tackles. Ethan Patterson got his second goal of the game to complete
a great effort from the whole side.
Awakeri Warriors had a good 7th grade game with Allandale Galaxy. Galaxy came
out the winners 2 - 1. The Warriors attacked well and had some good shots at
goal. Zalea Tipping's good passing and dribbling saw her named player of the
day. Nicole Webb also impressed with her runs forward.
Also in the 7th grade, Private Asset Management Awakeri Aces had a good first
half in their game with Ohope Dolphins, but they faded later to lose 6 - 0.
Tessa Dodson played well and was named player of the day.
Bay Milking Equipment Awakeri Incredibles played Ohope Raiders in the 8th grade
premier division, and lost 8 - 0, despite an improved showing in the second
half. Marshall McGuire got the player of the day, for a solid effort and excellent
marking of the opposition. He got the muckiest as well!
In the 8th grade 1st division, Performance Zone Awakeri Wild Cats had a two
all draw with Otakiri Soldiers. Tara van Beekhuizen and Sarah Sheaff both scored
goals, with Sarah picking up player of the day for a great first half on attack
and a brilliant second half playing goalie. Jenae Brownless had a strong game
too, being present all over the park.
Da Silva Autos Awakeri Dragons played a cliffhanger against
the Saints Go Girls and were pipped by a late winner to go down 3 - 2. The hard
working Cody Bragg opened the game with a well struck long range effort, but
the girls replied with two quick goals. One, in particular, was a very hard
low drive. Emma Paine was again a committed defender for Dragons, with Cody
Dakin offering hard tackles too. The second half saw player of the day Isaiah
Davidson out of goal and tieing up the scores 2 - 2 after a great weaving run
into the goal area. The supporters were on the edge of their seats as the game
neared the end. The Go Girls pressure on a goal kick paid off, securing the
winner with moments to spare. Lachlan Butler's passing was a feature of the
game.
In the 11th grade 1st division, O'Hagan's Awakeri Magic were well beaten by
Kawerau Gunners, but improving defence is a good sign for the future. Bryce
Hellier was named player of the day.
Awakeri Get Fresh Sharks had the bye in the 11th grade premier division, but
kept themselves fresh with a friendly against Saints All Blues. The strong Saints
team was 3 - 0 up at half time, but Sharks came back well, scoring twice and
almost snatching a draw. Justin Perkins was the player of the day. On Tuesday
Sharks have a catch up game against Whakatane Tricky Chicks at Awakeri at 4pm.
It should be a good battle.
