The match up between two of their seventh grade teams was the highlight for the Awakeri Football Club on Saturday.
Awakeri Warriors had a great game with Private Asset Management Awakeri Aces. Both teams played their hearts out. Terrific goalkeeping by Reaf Bruce kept the Warriors shots out, earning him player of the day for Aces. Ezra Young and Caden Laurent scored for Aces. Zalea Tipping and Thomas Lawn took the ball forward well for the Warriors. Ryan Mapu defended well too. Logan Calder was Warriors' player of the day, doing well up front and in his turn in goal.
Also in the seventh grade, Awakeri Comets traveled to Kawerau and despite a fairly evenly matched game ended up as losers by three goals to nil. Kawerau scored twice in the first half, but were restricted to only one further goal after the break. Comets' player of the day Jake Boyce took over goalie duties in the second half and showed great bravery using his head (literally) for a double save when two Kawerau forwards were looking certain to add a fourth goal. Once again the highlight of the Comets' game was the effort and great spirit shown by the entire team.
Awakeri Angels had an exciting, evenly-matched game with Ohope All Stars in the 6th grade. Ohope's striker had a few good runaway chances in the first half, but Haylee Schuler kept her team in the game with some great saves. Angels began the second half with great enthusiasm and dominated well for a few minutes, culminating in a forceful goal. Ohope equalised soon afterwards for a well deserved 1-1 draw. Player of the day was shared between two players who always play well and give a hundred per cent: Haylee Schuler and Sadie van Beekhuizen.
Awakeri Dolphins lost their 6th grade game with the Tarawera Eels 2 - 1. Goal scorer Ethan Forbes and goalkeeper Thomas Wessells were named players of the day for the Dolphins.
Also in the 6th grade, Private Asset Management Awakeri Jets had a 1 - o win against the Ohope Diamonds. Isaac Clement was the Jets player of the day, he worked hard on the field and made some good saves in goal. Kieron Butler was the goal scorer.
Performance Zone Awakeri Wild Cats were rapt to get their first win for a quite a while. Wild Cats beat Otakiri 4 - 1 in the eighth grade 1st division. Chrystal Marriner, Sarah Sheaff and Emily Julian (2) were the scorers. Taryn Forbes's fantastic positional play as a centre defender earned her player of the day. Tara Van Beekhuizen had a tremendous game as striker, putting in many well timed runs which set up three of the goals.
In the 8th grade premier division, Bay Milking Equipment Awakeri Incredibles played against K-town Krickets and lost 3-0. Incredibles played really well in the first half making the Krickets' goalie work hard and kept the defence solid too. In the second half, the Krickets took control.
The player of the day was Tylar Hall, who put in a solid effort for the whole game, outstanding attacking in the first half, then with his solid defending as a back in the second half.
In the 9th grade premier division Da Silva Autos Awakeri Dragons had a 0 - 0 draw with Saints Go Girls.
O'Hagan mortgages Awakeri Magic played at home against Saint Josephs in the 11th grade 1st division. Magic played well as a unit. Once again Shannon Frost's excellent goal keeping saved many attempts at the Magic's goal. By half time Magic were down 3-0. The play was a lot better in mid-field and up front in the second half. After an early Saints goal, the Magic were able to keep St Josephs at bay, even getting a goal back late in the half. A great centering kick by Nicole Theobald to Jaspreet Dharmet gave him the opportunity for a shot at goal which was saved by the Saints keeper. Theobald was in the right position to be able to capitalise and slot the goal away for the Magic. The final score was 4-1 to St Josephs. Hayley Calder was rewarded with player of the day for her valiant defending.
