There were close exciting games for most of Awakeri's soccer teams on Saturday.
The Awakeri Angels played an exciting and evenly matched 6th grade game against Taneatua. All the Angels played well and put in a great effort. Sadie van Beekhuizen, Haylee Schuler and Ayla Rowe showed good control and turning skills. Olivia Sheaff thoroughly deserved player of the day, playing well in goal, then competing for the ball all over the field in the second half and scoring two goals to secure the Angels a 2 - 1 win.
The Private Asset Management Awakeri Jets played the Paroa Jets in the 6th grade. A good even game kept everyone entertained, with Paroa finally winning 5 - 3. The goal scorers for Awakeri were player of the day Kieron Butler, Kaleb Muggeridge and Cambell Julian.
The Awakeri Comets were away at Thornton in the 7th grade. They defended excellently in a scoreless first half, with Ben White making some good diving saves in goal. In the second half, Awakeri came out much stronger and were rewarded with the only goal of the game. It was scored by Ethan Patterson, who showed great persistence following up after the Thornton goalie saved his first shot. Thornton were unlucky not to score, hitting the post three times and being denied by second half goalie Jake Boyce and some excellent defensive headers from player of the day Kevin Paulsen, who also made some great attacking runs up the pitch. An excellent all round team performance from Comets earned their 1 - 0 victory!
In the 8th grade premier division the Whakatane Force were too strong for Bay Milking Equipment Awakeri Incredibles. Incredibles kept their heads up and enjoyed the game despite taking a heavy defeat. Matthys Wessels was their player of the day.
Sounding like a scene from Harry Potter, O'Hagan's Awakeri Magic played Whakatane Magic in the 11th grade 1st division. It was a close game, with the score at half time being 1 - 1 and a final score at a 3 - 2 win to the Whakatane team. Awakeri's goals were scored by Katie White and Liam Wilkinson. There were strong defensive games by Keely Forbes and Nicole Theobald, ultimately earning Nicole player of the day. Jaspreet Dharmet and Shelby Raston also had good games for Awakeri.
In the 11th grade premier division, Awakeri Get Fresh Sharks had to come from behind to grab a 2 - 2 draw with Whakatane Tricky Chicks. Jack Du Toit played strongly and was Sharks' player of the day. Quest Tipping and Sean 'Boots' Young were the scorers.
