The highlight of Awakeri Soccer games on Saturday was the performance of their 11th grade premier team. Awakeri Get Fresh Sharks had a solid 4 - 2 win over the Ohope Crew. The game was evenly poised at one all, until Awakeri took control in the second half, scoring three very good goals. Ohope never gave up and scored a well deserved consolation goal in the last minute of play. Goal scorers for Awakeri were Quest Tipping, Jamie Findlay and Sean 'Boots' Young with two. Player of the day went to Daniel Gow, for his outstanding defensive game.
Perhaps it was post-school camp blues, O'Hagan's Awakeri Magic had a disappointing game, losing 6 - 0 to Kawerau in the 11th grade 1st division. Kawerau were too strong and forced Magic into basic mistakes. There was some exceptional play by Liam Wilkinson. Shelby Raston earned player of the day, coming on as a sub and putting some fire into the game as a left half. On the other side, Petri Rautenbach showed some flair taking the ball up the line too.
In the 9th grade premier division Da Silva Autos Awakeri Dragons put in a very good performance against Otakiri Raiders. Dragons had a lot of the play, passing and looking for space well, but they had to be content with a 1 - 1 draw. Finn Spod, who did well in midfield, and Centreece Baker, who made some telling tackles, shared player of the day honours. Cody Bragg scored the Dragons' goal.
Bay Milking Awakeri Incredibles put in a much improved game from last week in their 8th grade premier 3 - 2 loss to K Town Krickets. Incredibles only had four players and really had to work hard. Player of the day went to Kaia Reid. Her non-stop running and defending paid off, as she scored a goal. The other goal was scored by Marshall McGuire.
Performance Zone Awakeri Wildcats had a 5 - 1 loss to Allandale City in the 8th grade 1st division. Renske Brabant scored the Wild Cats goal. The team played really well showing a lot of determination, bravery and never gave up. Player of the day went to Sophie Lawrence for doing well in goal. She came off her line and took on some big players, which took a lot of courage. Referee Jeff van Beekhuizen did a fine job too.
The Awakeri Comets played the Ohope Dolphins in the 7th grade, and lost 4 - 0. It was a good effort by the Comets though and player of the day went to Kevin Paulsen. He did brilliantly in goal in the first half and then covered every blade of grass out on pitch in the second half.
Also in the 7th grade, Private Asset Management Awakeri Aces lost 4 - 0 to Ohope Mustangs. Caden Laurent was their player of the day.
Awakeri Warriors played Thornton Pukekos in the 7th grade, losing 6 - 3. Thomas Lawn scored twice and Ryan Mapu got a run away goal. Logan Calder was named player of day for excellent defending, with everyone else playing hard as well.
Awakeri Angels dominated their 6th grade game against Kawerau, which ended nil all. The girls all played with determination and passion. The player of the day was Lucy Knott.
Awakeri Dolphins played Taneatua Taniwha in the 6th grade and lost 0 - 4. Awakeri Dolphins played an impressive defensive game with great team work. Ethan Forbes was player of the day. Liam White's goal keeping skills were fantastic. Blake Hermansen had a great first game too. Taneatua Taniwha were generous hosts after the game.
A superb display of football saw Awakeri Jets defeat Saints United in the 6th grade. The Jets worked well as a team. For his support work in attack and defence, Kaleb Muggeridge was awarded player of the day.
