11th September 2011

The 8th grade premier derby between Awakeri's two sides was the highlight of Saturday's play for the club.
Da Silva Autos Awakeri Aces and Awakeri Comets enjoyed facing each other in their eagerly anticipated last game of the season. After going down 9 - 0 in the first round, Aces were keen to be more competitive this time. Comets started strongly with several attacks on Aces' goal and eventually went one up midway through the first half through a long range strike from Kevin Paulsen. Thanks to some great tackling in defence from player of the day Daniel Brown, they held their advantage until half time. Aces came out fighting in the second half with some great attacking play from Seth Kushnirenko, who was then rewarded with the equalising goal and was unlucky not to get a double. With time running down both teams had their chances to win. Ben White and Ben Olifiers had some good runs for Comets, but the game ended a one all draw. It was a fantastic game, played in good spirit by both teams.

In the 9th grade 1st division, HTL Spreading had their best game of the season. Good positional play led to a 3 - 0 win against Whakatane Panthers. Tylar Hall and Korben Wilson (2) were the scorers and Caleb Marshall made some telling saves in goal. The team shared the final player of the day award of their season.

Awakeri Wildcats attacked well in their 9th grade 1st division game with Te Teko Trout. A good Sarah Sheaff corner created the goal for a 1 - 0 win.

Get Fresh Awakeri Dragons were very unlucky in their 11th grade premier game with Ohope Rebels. Isaiah Davidson was their player of the day. Jaspreet Dharmet scored the goal in a 2 - 1 win by the Rebels.

The Murphy Brothers Awakeri Mud Dawgs had a solid win over Paroa in the 11th grade 1st division, scoring 5 goals to nil. Good team work was the key to the Dawgs' success which led to Taylor Harte's 3 goals, with Alex Coventry and Hayley Calder the other goal scorers. Player of the day went to Chrystal Marriner for setting up the first goal and her accurate passing.

Awakeri Sharks were defeated in the 13th grade by a rampant Saints All Blues team, who ran out the winners 10 - 0. Player of the day for the Sharks was awarded to Arko Brabant-Weitkamp who had his best game of the season on defence.

In the youngest age group, 6th grade, the teams all met to have a tournament day in Whakatane.
Awakeri Hotcars finished off a successful season taking part in the fantastically run 6th grade tournament. Hotcars won all four of their games with Jamie Julian, Oliver Forsyth, Elijah Wetting and Bonnie-Marie Wetting all scoring goals. Ella Forbes, Charlotte Paulsen and Mitchell du Toit all provided excellent support and defensive play. Great teamwork saw the entire team awarded player of the day!

The Mainstream Engineering Awakeri Hotshots played in the tournament too. All of the children played extremely well and were pretty exhausted by the end. They were well supported by the many parents on the sideline.

Awakeri Rascals also had a lot of fun at the tournament. The kids had a great time and it was a good way to end the season.

In the 7th grade, Awakeri Aces had another good game. They played the unbeaten Kawerau Raiders and beat them 2 - 1. The player of the day was Thomas Wessells, who impressed with his powerful kicking.

Awakeri All Stars had a 2 all draw against Edgecumbe Dragons in the 7th grade. It was an exciting last game! Player of day went to Lucy Butler for her awesome ball skills and determination. Kaleb Muggeridge scored the two goals.

In the 8th grade 1st division Awakeri Cheetah Girlz tried hard against a well drilled Whakatane team. Some good goalkeeping by Brodie Nathan and Olivia Sheaff kept the score down. Awakeri finished on a high scoring the last goal, courtesy of Tara Van Beekhuizen.

Most of Awakeri's teams have now finished their season's football and will look forward to the club break up on October 1st.
