The match up between Awakeri's two 9th grade teams in the third place play off at their tournament in Opotiki was a highlight for Awakeri's football teams on Saturday.
Awakeri Wildcats had three pool games followed by a playoff for 3rd and 4th against HTL Spreading Awakeri Phoenix, which ended in a 1 all draw. It was nice for both teams to finish third equal with their Awakeri club mates. The tournament ran smoothly and the games were all hotly contested. Phoenix had a loss and two wins on their way to the play off and all performed very well. Korben Wilson scored a hat-trick in one game and scored five altogether on the day. Marshall McGuire was pleased to score his first ever goal too. Goal scorers for Wild Cats were Jenae Brownless, Emily Julian, Taryn Forbes, and Sarah Sheaff. Emily Robbie did well in goal and Linette Lengkeek continues to show improvement each week and is turning into a terrific defender.
After a frosty start on Saturday morning, Da Silva Autos Awakeri Aces were 3 - 0 down early in the first half against Saints in the 8th grade premier division. However, Aces showed great courage and team spirit in the second half. With the help of Reaf Bruce in goal, Aces did not concede any more goals and had some good attacking runs but were unlucky not to score. The final score stayed 3 - 0, with Reaf Bruce named player of the day.
Also in that division, the Awakeri Store Comets picked up where they left off last week with a win at home against James Street Gunners. James Street started the stronger side but good defending and a great save from Corisa Johnston pushing the ball onto the post kept the score to 0 - 0 at half-time. In the second half the Comets came out blazing and a Kevin Paulsen hat-trick secured a 3 - 0 victory. Once again, the teamwork was a pleasure to watch. Daniel Brown made several vital tackles, but player of the day went to Ethan Patterson who was full of running and supported well in both attack and defence.
Awakeri Aces had to help their opponents Te Teko out with players so they could have their 7th grade game on Saturday. Kaedyn Portsmouth was player of the day after he sportingly played for the opposition.
Hayden Baxter scored two goals to help the Awakeri All Stars beat Allandale Rovers 3 - 2 in a competitive 7th grade game.
In the 6th grade, Awakeri Hotcars had a fun filled game against Whakatane Penguins, winning 3 - 1. The goal scorers were Jamie Julian (2) and Elijah Wetting-Davidson. The whole team was named player of the day for their fantastic team work.
Mainstream Engineering Awakeri Hotshots had no reserves and all played hard against Saints Dragons in the 6th grade. Player of the day Alyssa Cruse came close to scoring for the Hotshots. Dragons won the game 4 - 0.
Also in the 6th grade, Awakeri Rascals had a good game with Allandale, with Allandale winning 4 - 1. Stephanie Martin was named player of the day after bravely playing on when injured.
The only older grade team to play was Get Fresh Awakeri Dragons. They played Whakatane Tricky Chicks on Friday afternoon in the 11th grade premier division. Dragons put in a much better showing than the first time these teams met, with better passing and some good midfield work from Finn Spod and Lauren Baxter in particular. Emma Paine's solid tackling earned her player of the day. Jamie Findlay also did very well in his half game in goal. The Tricky Chicks won the game 4 - 0.
