Emily Julian's four goal haul was one highlight of Awakeri's football games on Saturday.

Awakeri Wild Cats played Opotiki in the 9th grade 1st division. The Wild Cats used their space well, with player of the day Emily Julian taking the chances for a 4 - 0 win to Wild Cats.

Also in that division, HTL Spreading Awakeri Pheonix defended well against James Street. Jakes Rowlings hard work in defence earned him player of the day. Matthys Wessells was another to perform well. James Street won the game 1 - 0.

The Get Fresh Awakeri Dragons played a fantastic first half against the visiting Saints in the 11th grade premier division. Coming into the break at nil all after absorbing heavy pressure early on. the hard tackling Lauren Baxter, ranging in front of the defensive pairing of Jamie Findlay and Oliver Thompson meant the Saints were pushed wide and their crosses were mopped up by goalkeeper Shannon Frost, who dominated her area. Going forward, Finn Spod and Isaiah Davidson were beginning to link with well with their forward runners Emma Paine and Johannes Wessels. However football can be a harsh teacher and the important first few minutes of the second half caught the Dragons "still in the sheds" and it was two nil. To the Dragons' credit, they reacted and went forward coming close on the break with the quick footed Jaspreet Dharmet on two occasions. Saints closed the game out with some great individual goals late on, the final 5 - 0 scoreline perhaps flattering the visitors. With a valuable lesson learned, the Dragons look forward to the remaining games of the season.

In the 11th grade 1st division, the Murphy Brothers Awakeri Mud Dawgs had a good 2 - 0 win over Otakiri on Saturday. The Awakeri Store Comets were at home to Kawerau Knights in the 8th grade permier division and found themselves a goal behind at half time after a great individual effort. In the second half of a very even game, Comets came close with efforts from Ethan Patterson and Kevin Paulsen, and goalie Corisa Johnston made a couple of great saves, just as Nicole Webb had done in the first half. Despite the team's efforts, they were unable to score an equalizer, and just as they did when the teams met earlier in the season, Kawerau scored in the last minute to record a 2 - 0 victory. Comets' player of the day was Cody Cook who made an instant impact with his tackling and running with the ball, whenever he was on the pitch.
