25th June 2011
The highlight of Awakeri's soccer games on Saturday was
the match up between their two 9th grade 1st division teams. Awakeri Wild Cats
and HTL Spreading Awakeri Phoenix both played their hearts out before a noisy
sideline of spectators. The defensive work from both teams was outstanding.
The deadlock was broken late in the 2nd half when Korben Wilson set up Liam
McCormick to score a nice goal to grab the win for the Phoenix. The Wildcats
player of the day went to Emily Robbie who had her first game of the season
and contributed well. Tara van Beekhuizen's determined work in defence saw her
named player of the day for the Phoenix. The sideline banter from parents was
an added bonus to a fun competitive morning of soccer.
In the 11th grade premier division, Get Fresh Awakeri Dragons put together a
much improved display. A few lapses in concentration saw Whakatane Magpies eventually
win 4 - 1. Dragons had a specially good spell just after half time, with good
passing culminating in a Cody Bragg goal. Lauren Baxter's tenacious tackling
earned her player of the day plaudits. Shannon Frost once again had a strong
game in goal.
Murphy Brothers Awakeri Mud Dawgs had a very narrow defeat against Allandale
United in the 11th grade 1st division, going down 3 - 2. The game was very even
and could have gone either way but unfortunately the soccer gods were not with
the Mud Dawgs who had many shots at goal just miss. Player of the day went to
Hoani Perkins, who is improving every game and is becoming a very reliable defender.
In the 13th grade, Renshaw Jewellers Awakeri Sharks put together a good determined
team effort, and were unlucky to go down 8 - 0 to the strong Saints All Blues
team. A great start by the Sharks saw the half time score at 2 -0. Fantastic
defending from Dylan Hoefsloot saw him awarded player of the day. Jordan Andrew
and Katy White also had outstanding games.
Awakeri's youngest grades were thrilled to be back on the field again.
Awakeri Hotshots lost 4 - 2 to the Saints Swordfish in the 6th grade. They enjoyed
the muddy conditions. Player of the day for Hotshots was Tyson Yates.
The Awakeri Rascals played the Ohope Sapphires at a very wet and muddy Awakeri
in their 6th grade game They won 3 - 1, with goals scored by Campbell Henderson,
Katie Mahy and Oliver Young. Kyle Lawrence and Ayla Rowe had great games in
the goal stopping a number of potential scoring opportunities for the opposition.
The team enjoyed getting covered in mud and playing a good game of soccer. Player
of the day went to Campbell Henderson after scoring his first goal for the season.
Also in the 6th grade, Awakeri Hotcars had a muddy battle in slushy conditions,
going down 8 - 0 to Allandale Galaxy. Player of the Day was awarded to Bonnie-Marie
Davidson-Wetting, who had a fantastic game in goal in the first half. Ella Forbes
also had a great game, and was unlucky not to score.
In the 7th grade Awakeri All Stars beat Whakatane Pumas 3 - 1. The enthusiastic
Jake Boyce was their player of the day.
Da Silva Autos Awakeri Aces improved on their last game and were unlucky to
go down 2 - 0 to Ohope in the 8th grade premier division. Caden Laurent and
Campbell Forsyth had some great runs up the paddock for the Aces, Tayla Jones
did some good tackles in defence, watched the play and got back when needed.
Lilly Du Toit had a great all round game and was player of the day.
The 8th Grade premier Awakeri Store Comets were at home against one of the league's
stronger teams, Ohope Gunners. The speed and finishing of the Ohope team was
the real difference between the sides and Awakeri found themselves six goals
behind, before a fantastic team effort in the second half saw Kevin Paulsen
score a consolation goal after a couple of close efforts had been cleared. There
were a couple of candidates for player of the day, but Corisa Johnston's efforts
in goal and on the field in the second half were deserving of the award.
Awakeri Cheetah Girlz had a strong game against Ohope Piranhas in the 8th grade
1st division, with strong runs from Brodie Nathan and Katie Growden and a good
defensive effort from Aleisha Boyce. Brodie Nathan got player of the day for
a good all round performance. Goal scorers were Brodie Nathan and Sadie Van
Beekhuizen. The final score was 2 - 2.
