27th August 2011
After scoring fifteen goals in their last three games, Renshaw
Jewellers Awakeri Sharks finally could celebrate their first win of the season!
Sharks played Otakiri in the 13th grade, and ran out the winners 7 - 0. Daniel
Perkinson's outstanding four goal haul, playing up front, earned him the player
of the day. Katy White, Jordan Andrew and Fletcher Forsyth also chimed in with
goals apiece.
In the 11th grade premier division, Get Fresh Awakeri Dragons put in a good
performance against the high flying Kawerau Gunners. Player of the day Oliver
Thompson organised his back line well and converted a penalty confidently. Finn
Spod had a strong game on the right wing. Gunners won the game 7 - 1.
Murphy Brothers Awakeri Mud Dawgs had an exciting game with Whakatane Tigers
in the 11th grade 1st division, keeping the crowd of spectators well entertained.
The Dawgs made quite a few opportunities, including hitting the woodwork. Taylor
Harte continued his goal scoring feats with a brace in what turned out to be
a 2 - 2 draw. Jack Du Toit had a strong game in the midfield and player of the
day Ruby Murphy got stuck in doing her defensive work.
Awakeri Wild Cats went down 2 - 1 in a very close 9th grade 1st division game
with James Street. Emily Julian scored their only goal, with Linette Lengeek
gaining player of the day for her great tackling and clearing kicks. Jenae Brownless
also had a top game.
While HTL Spreading Awakeri Phoenix's opposition didn't show up in the 9th grade,
they had a hard fought game with the parents and Rylee Looney was thrilled to
score against them.
Awakeri Store Comets had an away game against Ohope Lightning in the 8th grade
premier division. In the first half Comets had most of the possession and after
some great play by Cody Cook, Kevin Paulsen put Awakeri in front. The second
half was much more even and Ohope were rewarded for their efforts with two goals
in quick succession. Despite some great attempts on goal Awakeri were unable
to score again and the Ohope team ended up 2 - 1 winners. Inder Aujla was named
player of the day for his tackling and battling for everything.
As expected league leaders Kawerau Cruisers came out strongly right from the
start of their 8th grade premier game against Da Silva Autos Awakeri Aces. Aces
defended extremely well and were only 1 - 0 down at half time. Cambell Forsyth
had some good attacking runs in the second half but Kawerau were too strong
on attack, going on to win 4 - 0. Tayla Jones had another strong game in defence
and Cambell Forsyth was player of the day.
In the 8th grade 1st division Awakeri Cheetah Girlz had another strong game.
They were unlucky to lose 3 - 1 to Otakiri. Olivia Sheaff scored a fantastic
goal and had some other good shots saved. Lucy Knott was named player of the
day for her defensive effort on the pitch.
Awakeri Aces played Otakiri in the 7th grade and won 4 - 0. The Aces all played
well and it was hard to decide on player of the day, however Ethan Forbes was
awarded it, as he scored the most goals.
6th grade Mainstream Engineering Awakeri Hotshots played well with everyone
attending. They played against James St Green Tigers and won 5 - 0. The player
of the day was Kaitlyn Parker. She impressed with her passing skills.
Awakeri Rascals played Ohope All Stars in the 6th grade and lost 1 - 0. It was
a very close contest. Ayla Rowe and player of the day Katie Mahy stood out with
great performances for the Rascals.
Awakeri Hot Cars lost a hard fought game 3 - 0 to the Saints Swordfish, also
in the 6th grade. Player of the day was awarded Jamie Julian for his tenacious
efforts in defence. Mitchell Du Toit also put in a solid effort with some well
placed kicks during the game.
