Awakeri's youngest football teams led the way on Saturday, with some positive results and good performances.
Awakeri Rascals played Whakatane Penguins at Awakeri in the 6th grade and won 3 - 1. The goals were scored by Oliver Young, Jake Laurent and Ayla Rowe. Katie Mahy had an outstanding game and helped lead her team to the win with her great kicking, gaining herself the player of the day award.
Awakeri Hotcars had a great game against Kawerau Kougaz in the 6th grade, winning 4 - 2. Oliver Forsyth and Jamie Julian were the goal scorers for the Hotcars with 2 each. Charlotte Paulsen was awarded player of the day for her fantastic determination and great goalkeeping skills in the second half.
Also in the 6th grade, Mainstream Engineering Awakeri Hotshots played Saints Tigers and won 6 - 1. It was an action packed game, with Blake Hermansen player of the day for the Hotshots.
In the 7th grade Awakeri Aces played Saints Shooters and had an awesome game. It was good to see the players using the passing skills they had been practising at training in their game. Player of the day Ethan Forbes scored four of the goals, with Aces winning 6 - 1.
The Awakeri All stars played an excellent 7th grade game against Te Teko Tuna, with improved passing and team-work. Player of the day went to Kaleb Muggeridge for a hat trick and great passing. The All Stars won three nil.
The Awakeri Store Comets had a tough home game in the 8th grade premier division against Kawerau Crusaders. Despite some great saves by the goalies Ben White and Corisa Johnston, Comets ended up losing 5 - 0. There were some positives in the excellent team work that was shown and tireless running and hard tackling earned Cody Cook the player of the day award.
Da Silva Autos Awakeri Aces were slow in the first half of their 8th grade premier match against Ohope Gunners, and didn't get into the game until the second half. By then the damage was done. The final score was 7 - 0. Seth Kushnirenko was Aces' player of the day with some good runs and great positional play.
Conversely, Awakeri Cheetah Girlz played a strong 1st half but fell away in the second in their 8th grade 1st division game against Otakiri. Aleisha Boyce saved lots of Otakiri attempts at goal. They had lots of attempts of their own but couldn't find the back of the net. Player of the day went to
Katie Growden for her awesome effort around the field. Otakiri won 3 - 0.
Awakeri Wildcats had a great win against Ohope in the 9th grade 1st division, winning 2 - 0. Emily Julian scored both goals and played a very good centre midfielder's game, doing a lot of work at both ends of the field. Wildcats' two goalies Linette Lengeek and Monique Ruiter were very valuable, saving many attempts at goal. Player of the day was Sophie Lawrence, who is having a great season. She dominated the backline, cutting off many attacking moves. The team structure and the contribution of every team member was a highlight.
HTL Spreading Awakeri Phoenix had a good game with Eastpack Opotiki in the 9th grade 1st division. The Phoenix's team play is developing well. Tylar Hall was their player of the day, with a strong performance both on defence and attack. Caleb Marshall did well in goal and Liam McCormick (2) and Renske Brabant scored the goals in a 3 - 2 win.
The Get Fresh Awakeri Dragons had a hard fought 4 - 0 loss to Kawerau in the 11th grade premier division. Keeping pace with the visitors, they went into the break 1 - 0 down with strong games from Isaiah Davidson and Jacob Davis, who got player of the day for good control and always looking for a pass. Dragons came out a bit cold from the break and Kawerau were able to clinch the game with two goals in two minutes. They sealed it later, despite great efforts in goal by Shannon Frost. Jamie Findlay made some good runs and when the players can link those runs and passes together, the goals will surely start to come.
In the 11th grade 1st division, Murphy Brothers Awakeri Mud Dawgs had a good game with Whakatane Dolphins. Ethan Robertshaw's solid defence saw him named player of the day. Jack Du Toit distributed well from the midfield to create chances for the Mud Dawgs. Goals from Taylor Harte (2), Alex Coventry and an own goal earned Awakeri a 4 - 2 win.
Renshaw Jewellers Awakeri Sharks played away to Kawerau Fury in the 13th grade. A determined Sharks team came out fighting, however were unlucky to go down 4 - 0. Player of the day, Abbey Coventry had a fantastic game in defence and played hard right to the last whistle. Jade Fletcher and Daniel Perkinson also had great games with both being unlucky not to score.
