2nd July 2011
A high scoring Awakeri derby was one of the highlights
of some good results for Awakeri Football Club.
The Awakeri Store Comets first win of the season finally came in impressive
style and was one of those games where everything that has been so close during
the season so far, just fell into place. Comets played Da Silva Autos Awakeri
Aces in the 8th grade premier division. The first couple of goals came courtesy
of Kevin Paulsen's speed and cool finishing, and he kept the scoring going throughout
the half for his team to be 6 - 0 up at half-time. The Aces, after a slow start,
had some good forward runs but the Comets defence were able to save any attempts
made on their goal. After the interval there was no further score until half
way through the second period when further goals were added by Kevin Paulsen
and Ben White, who both showed great determination in the way they scored. Kevin
added one more goal before the finish, so it was no surprise when he was given
the player of the day trophy for his eight goal haul, in the team's 9 - 0 victory.
Caden Laurent had another strong game for the Aces, but was missing his wing
man Cambell Forsyth, who was off sick. Ryan Mapu had another great game in goal
in the second half and was Aces' player of the day.
In the 6th grade, Mainstream Engineering Awakeri Hotshots drew one all against
the Kawerau Strikers. The players all had fun and played well together. Mia
Cruse was player of the day.
Awakeri Hotshots played Saints in the 6th grade, and lost.
Awakeri Hotcars played a close 6th grade game against K-Town Kiwis, winning
2 - 1. Ella Forbes and Elijah Davidson-Wetting were the goal scorers. Player
of the day was awarded to Ella Forbes for scoring her first goal of the season
and her great attacking plays.
The 7th grade Awakeri Aces had another awesome game today. They played Edgecumbe
and won 5 goals to 2. The player of the day was Xanthe Nurkka, for her goal
keeper skills.
Also in the 7th grade, Awakeri All Stars beat Otakiri 2 - 0. Player of the day
Lucy Butler showed good skills and almost scored. Cody Hutchings and Jack Elliott

team in the 8th grade 1st division. Ella Jones and Aleisha Boyce tried hard
all game. Aleisha Boyce got player of the day for good defence in the first
half then good goal keeping in the second. Thornton won 4 - 0.
Excellent defence by both teams had the 9th grade 1st division game between
HTL Spreading Awakeri Phoenix and Whakatane Panthers end in a 0 - 0 draw. Caleb
Marshall and Jake Rowling did well in their turns in goal for the Phoenix, while
player of the day Rylee Looney was outstanding in defence.
Awakeri Wild Cats also had a draw in the 9th grade 1st division. A high scoring
4 - 4 against Te TekoTrout. Sarah Sheaff and Emily Julian both scored two goals
