6th August 2011
Awakeri's football teams were pleased to be back on the park
on Saturday after the holiday break. A lot of players had enjoyed the football
holiday programmes run by Mike Ward during the break and were keen to put their
new skills and enthusiasm into practice.
The highlight of the games on Saturday was the match up between two of the club's
youngest teams. Awakeri Hotcars had a fun filled game playing Mainstream Engineering
Awakeri Hotshots. Hotcars won the game 1 - 0 with Jamie Julian scoring for Hotcars.
Mitchell du Toit was their player of the day, while Kaia Skipps got that honour
for the Hotshots for communicating well. Elijah Wetting and Oliver Forsyth also
had good games for the Hotcars.
Also in the 6th grade, Awakeri Rascals had a very good game with Saints Dragons.
Jake Laurent's excellent defence had him named player of the day. Katie Mahy
did a fantastic job in goal for Rascals. The Dragons won 2 - 0.
Ethan Forbes was on fire for Awakeri Aces in their 7th grade game with Ohope
Diamonds. He scored five goals, but the Diamonds also played well, with Aces
winning 5 - 1. Kaedyn Portsmouth was player of the day.
The Awakeri All stars lost against Saints Shooters 2 - 3 in their 7th grade
game. It was a well matched game and both teams enjoyed the challenge. Cody
Hutchings and Liam White scored one goal each for All Stars. Player of the day
went to Cody Hutchings for outstanding attacking play.
In the 8th grade premier league, Da Silva Autos Awakeri Aces played very well
against the tough Kawerau Knights team. Aces were competitive and Codi Laurent's
efforts in defence and on attack saw him named player of the day. Knights won
3 - 0.
Awakeri Store Comets were away to Saints Crusaders in the 8th grade. In the
first half Kevin Paulsen had plenty of attempts on goal and scored for Awakeri
to be 1 - 0 up at half-time. In the second half Kevin turned from goalscorer
in attack, to goal saver in defence earning him the player of the day trophy.
Ben White and Daniel Brown shared the goalkeeping duties, and unfortunately
for Awakeri, victory was denied by a Crusaders goal in the final minute of the
game which ended in a 1 - 1 draw.
The 8th grade 1st division had a tournament day at Ohope. Awakeri Cheetah Girlz
played well in it. Everyone played their hardest, and have shown a massive improvement.
The player of the day went to Ella Jones for her great defence and commitment
in goal. The Girlz came away with a draw and two losses.
Awakeri Wildcats had a great tussle with Otakiri in the 9th grade, going down
2 - 1. Emily Julian scored for the Wildcats and Sarah Sheaff was player of the
day for a top game in goal. Her domination of the goalie box and her big goal
kicks were a highlight. Monique Ruiter had a very busy game making many tackles.
Wildcats pressed hard for large periods of the second half and were unlucky
at times but were kept out by good defence by Otakiri.
Also in the 9th grade, HTL Spreading Awakeri Phoenix seemed to be still in holiday
mode for their home game against Ohope, losing 3 - 0. Renske Brabant-Weitkamp
earned player of the day for a hard working performance. Liam McCormick also
impressed with his efforts.
Murphy Brothers Awakeri Mud Dawgs had an even battle with Whakatane Nitros in
the 11th grade 1st division. The game was enjoyed by both teams and although
the Mud Dawgs had a lot of possession, the Nitros won 3 - 1. Player of the day
Keely Forbes was solid in defence. Alex Coventry scored for the Phoenix and
played well in the midfield.
In the 11th grade premier division Get Fresh Awakeri Dragons started slowly
against Ohope Rebels but were more competitive as the game went on. Isaiah Davidson
made some good saves in goal. Player of the day Lauren Baxter tackled back well
from her forward position. Finn Spod also played some intelligent football.
Rebels won the game 5 - 0.
In the 13th grade Renshaw Jewellers Awakeri Sharks played Saints Stars and were
again unfortunate to go down 6 - 0 after trailing 1 - 0 at half time. Dillon
Murray and Jade Fletcher were named Sharks' players of the day, with both having
fantastic games. Katy White also had an outstanding game.
