President's report 2001

In the 2001 season, Awakeri fielded 10 teams in the EBOP leagues, in the following grades:
6th (2), 7th (2), 8th, 9th (2), 11th (2) and 13th. Altogether 120 players wore the Awakeri
colours, which was excellent.
The club is grateful to its sponsors: David da Silva Autos, Adamson’s Amcal Pharmacy,
Gould Contracting, Total Power Services, Draintech Diggers, Alfresco Court Motels, and
Private Asset Management.

The impact of Federation Three in running soccer in our area (Waikato / BOP) has less
impact than we expected and the EBOPJFA still ran junior soccer how they chose to. The
bigger impact of Fed 3 was on rep soccer, where they ran federation rep teams, taking the
cream of players (and also their parents, who often were involved in coaching) from the local
associations. However the local sides still fielded rep teams successfully and our club
members benefited from that.
There has been a lot of debate about the success of the small sided games for the younger age
groups, and the EBOPJFA has decided to modify team sizes (no. of players) and pitch sizes
for a number of age groups for this season. They are also looking at altering the age groups
for older ages groups to ‘try to retain players’.

In the 2001 season there were many highlights for the Awakeri Soccer Club. These include:
The 11th grade ‘B’ team winning the C division unbeaten
Matthew Ward scoring four successive hat-tricks in the 13th grade
Caleb Sheather scoring seven goals in a game
6th grader Keanu Carter’s overhead kick
The 26 goals scored in one 7th grade encounter (two games 8 - 6 and 11 - 1)
The popularity of family soccer in the summer
The visit of coach Dean Burton from England
The older kids being inspired by the movie There’s Only One Jimmy Grimble
Parents falling over spectacularly in the wet conditions at the breakup day

I would like to thank the teams’ coaches: Lea-anne Sheather, Mark & Tracey Morrison (6th
grade), Rod Kamphorst, Amy Ingle, Gary Rowlands & Stuart Munro (7th Grade); Neil
Mower & Peter Sonntag (8th); Peter Sheather, Alan Barr & Graeme Reeves (9th); Chris
Stanton, Stu Goodhew, Mike Scott & Peter Macdonald (11th); and myself ! (13th).

This year our club had nine EBOP reps: U-13: Matthew Ward, Jeremy Hawkes, U-12 Lance
Robison, U-11: Ben McPherson, Jordan Macdonald, U-8: Vincent Sheather, Matthew
Reeves, Waylon Skipps, Devon Swart. Congratulations to these players!

The sportsmanship trophies for the season went to:
Matthew Ward, Mark Ernest, Hayden Soeters, Chelsie Pettinger, Vikki Lowndes, Matthew
Richmond, Riki Roia, Keanu Carter, Leah Sheather, and Jordan Steer.

I would especially like to thank Helen Ernest for her willing work as secretary/treasurer and
Chris Stanton for his support as vice-president.
We would also like to thank the Awakeri School BOT and principal Peter Fitzgerald for their
support.
