President's report 2002

In the 2002 season, Awakeri fielded 13 teams in the EBOP leagues, in the following grades: 6th (2),
7th (2), 8th (2), 9th, 10th (2), 11th, Int Girls, 13th and 15th. This is the most teams we have ever
fielded. It was exciting to have our first all girls team, and to field a 15th grade team for the first time
for years.
The club is grateful to its sponsors: David da Silva Autos, Adamson’s Amcal Pharmacy, Total Power
Services, Draintech Diggers, Alfresco Court Motels, and Private Asset Management.

Federation Three has been in financial difficulty for the last 12 months. While the clubs staved off
efforts to impose a levy to bail the federation out partway through the season, a levy has been set for
the start of this season. This will increase the fees for our older players significantly. The Federation
has also had two CEOs resign in the past 12 months, showing the pressure they have been under.
Fortunately, the local association EBOPJFA has carried on organising local soccer efficiently, despite
the threat of being disbanded by the federation!

In the 2002 season there were many highlights for the Awakeri Soccer Club. These include:
Leonard Sonntag scoring four goals in an 11th grade game
Robert Law and Leah Sheather scoring for the opposition, earning a 2- 0 ‘win’
Hat-trick heroes Riki Roia, Vincent Sheather, Gareth Rowlands
Kelly Stanton being picked in the Federation rep side, which went on to win the
national tournament
The 8th grade team coming 2nd in the Barry McMeeking tournament
The efforts of Devon Swart before he departed for the Phillippines
10th grade Aces overturning a 12- 0 hiding to beat the unbeaten Opotiki 1 - 0
The inspiration of Bend It Like Beckham

I would like to thank the teams’ coaches: Shannon Burgess, Mark Muncaster (6th grade), Lea-anne
Sheather & Walter McIndoe, Neville Prout & Joe & Vicky Richards (7th Grade); Rod Kamphorst &
Doug Christensen, Gary & Debra Rowlands (8th); Mark Brogden (9th); Peter Sheather, Chris Stanton
& Alan Barr (10th); Graeme Reeves & Peter Sonntag (11th); Mike Scott (Int Girls); Chris Whitaker
(13th); and myself (15th)!

This year our club had fourteen EBOP and Federation reps: U-14: Matthew Ward, Jeremy Hawkes,
U-10 James Attewell, Matthew Bateson, U-9: Vincent Sheather, Matthew Reeves, Waylon Skipps,
Chris Johnston & Matthew Richmond, U-8: Stephen Glassbrook, Jayden Haddock, Gareth Rowlands,
Guy Kamphorst. Fed 3 10 - 12 year girls: Kelly Stanton. Two of our ex-players played for a combined
Edgecumbe side and got into the reps as well: Daniel Goodhew & Richmond Brown. Congratulations
to all these players!
Peter Sheather was ‘nominated’ to be rep coach for the EBOP 9th grade, and was noted to have done a
very good job. Congratulations Peter!

The sportsmanship trophies for the season went to:
Nicholas Haslam, Simon Barr, Christine Scott, James Wilson, Kimberley Byres, Robert Sonntag,
Matthew Fulton, Gareth Rowlands, Guy Kamphorst, Mark Morrison, Clive McIndoe, Tautari Merito,
Kurt Turpie

Many thanks to Helen Ernest for her excellent work as secretary/treasurer and Chris Stanton for his
support as vice-president.
