President’s report 2003

In the 2003 season, Awakeri fielded 13 teams in the EBOP leagues, in the following grades: 6th, 7th
(2), 8th (2), 9th (2), 10th, 11th (2), Jnr HS Girls, 13th and 15th. This is again an excellent range of
teams and it was perhaps our most successful ever
The club is grateful to its sponsors: David da Silva Autos, Adamson’s Amcal Pharmacy, Total Power
Services, Draintech Diggers, and Private Asset Management.

The season was a settled year. The EBOPJFA ran leagues without pressure from the federation to alter
them. Our intermediate girls team ended up playing Junior High School league, but acquitted
themselves very well. While reps as we know it disappeared and this was a disappointing aspect of the
season, those who enrolled in the IPDP programme seem to have benefited. This coming season IPDP
entry will be by trial, with something more like the tradition district reps being planned.

In the 2003 season there were many highlights for the Awakeri Soccer Club. These include:
The13th grade winning their league
The 15th grade and JHS Girls teams coming 3rd.
The 11th grade winning the final round of their league.
International soccer at Awakeri when and EBOP team hosted Wollongong Wolves.
The enthusiastic girls making some cool corner flags.
Four players scoring hat-tricks on the same day! (Reender Buikema, Danniella Palmer,
Matthew Bateson and Vinnie Sheather.
The popularity of ball juggling at school, with quite a few players best over 100 and Hawea
Mansell over 300.
Ben McPherson scoring six goals in a game v Opotiki.
Brian Sisam spilling his sideline cup of coffee trying to control a wayward ball!
Jeremy Hawkes returning from a bad knee injury and calling out “Chee Threers for Ohope”
at the end of his comeback game!

I would like to thank the teams’ coaches: James & Sue Holani, Mark & Tracey Morrison (6th gr),
Shannon Burgess, Mark Muncaster (7th grade), Lea-anne Sheather & Walter McIndoe, Neville Prout
(8th gr) Joe & Vicky Richards & Doug Christensen, Stu Munro & Dave Cram (9th Grade); Mark
Brogden & Mark Gurran (10th), Rod Kamphorst, Peter Sheather (11th), Peter Macdonald & Mark
Haslam (JHS Girls); Chris Whitaker & Rod McPherson (13th); and myself (15th)!

This year our club had only one rep player, Kelly Stanton (Fed 3 13th gr girls). Ex-player Rink
Tacoma also got into the Canterbury girls reps!

The sportsmanship trophies for the season went to:
Cameron Morrison (6th gr), Matthew Eveleens & Shane Gow (7th), Ben Fretwell & Tyler Mansell
(8th), Stephen Glassbrook & Rhys Cram (9th), Kane Wakefield (10th), Vincent Sheather & Mathew
Bateson (11th), Hayden Te Moana (13th), Emma Searle (JHS Girls), Matthew Shaw (15th).

Many thanks to Helen Ernest for her excellent work as secretary/treasurer and Walter McIndoe for his
support as vice-president.
