Awakeri Soccer Club
President's report 2005
In the 2005 season, Awakeri fielded 11 teams in the EBOP leagues, in the following
grades: 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th (2), 11th (3), 13th (2) and 15th.
The club is grateful to its sponsors: David da Silva Autos, Total Power Services,
Private Asset Management, the Edge Swim School, CJ McIndoe Builders and Agritech
Trailers.
In the 2005 season there were many highlights. These include:
Soccer being more visible with more role models available to young players,
through Ryan Nelsen (Blackburn), Simon Elliot (Fulham), the Knights and the
All Whites
The 15th grade Awakeri team winning their league, equal first.
On 14 Aug four goal keepers were named their team's player of the day. In a
tough day, only the young 6th grade Awakeri Tigers had a win, out of 12 teams
playing!
Lots of Awakeri players trying out for the reps.
11th grade Dragons scoring four goals against champs Saints, unfortunately Saints
scored eight!
A great game between 11th grade Dragons and Diggers in a school lunchtime. Dragons
snatched the 1 - 0 win with a calm finish from Mark Morrison.
Glen Askey playing a full game without putting his hands in his pockets!
She'd never scored a goal in all her years of playing, but one Saturday, Terri-Anne
Hollis scored four!
Jayden Haddock scoring a hat-trick and still losing!
I would like to thank the teams' coaches: Corey Sanson (6th gr), Sue Holani
& Frank van der Gulik (7th), Rod McPherson (8th gr), Graeme Reeves (9th),
Wilco Klein-Ovink & Brett Frost (9th), Walter McIndoe & Lea-anne Sheather
(11th) Stan McKeown (11th), Dave Cram (11th), Rod Kamphorst & Peter Sheather
(13th), Gary Rowlands (13th), Chris Whitaker (15th).
The sportsmanship trophies for the season went to:
Daniel Perkinson (6th), Shane Hope (7th), Joshua Klein-Ovink (8th), Carrie Fynn
(9th), Jordan Sutton (9th), Thomas Attewell (11th), Terri-Anne Hollis (11th),
Kararaina Kingi (11th), Paul Haslam (13th), Chris Johnston (13th), David Wakelin
(15th)
It was also good to see district reps back functioning. These players represented
the Eastern Bay:
U- 15 Ben McPherson, David Wakelin, Jono Whitaker U - 13 Finn Kamphorst, Matthew
Bateson, Ben Hancox, U- 11 Stephen Glassbrook, U- 9 Jordan Sutton, U-8 Sam McPherson.
The future: There is a push for more competitive leagues, with 8th and 9th grades
having competitive components in the coming season, and the expectation that
teams will be selected to play on ability if there are two teams in an age group.
Many thanks once again to Helen Ernest for her excellent work as secretary/treasurer.
