President's report 2008

In the 2008 season, Awakeri fielded 14 teams in the EBOP leagues, in the following grades: 6th (3), 7th (2), 8th (2), 9th (2), 11th (2), 13th (2) and 15th. It was pleasing to have so many players involved, and to have a 15th grade team again.

The club is grateful to its sponsors: Hi-Way Tyres, Eastern Bay Property Maintenance, Performance Zone, Da Silva Autos, Columbus Café, Veronica Hall, AB Contracting, The Wrangler, CJ McIndoe Builders, Grant Perkins.

In the 2008 season there were many highlights for the Awakeri Soccer Club. These include:
Having the goals renovated, thanks to Wilco.
The 15th grade team being much too strong for most of their opponents, winning six games by double figure scores.
Rhys Cram, Lindsey Cotter, Emily Julian and Tara van Beekhuizen all scoring hat-tricks on the same day.
Quest Tipping scoring 20 goals for the season (8th grade Rangers), closely followed by Sean Young 19 (8th gr Mosquitoes) and Lindsey Cotter 18 (15th gr).
The 15th gr beating league leaders Whakatane 6 - 0.
Chris Johnston's family soccer team being called TTO (Taneatua Turn Off apparently!).
Seeing Sam McPherson wear his Wellington Phoenix shirt to school regularly.
Having the Plains Rangers team play at Awakeri.

Awakeri had 5 BBOP rep players in 2008: 12th gr Rory MacGregor, 11th gr Sam McPherson, 10th gr Tiaan Brownless & Caleb Carter, 8th gr Quest Tipping.
I would like to thanks our coaches: Josh Hyndman, Wilco Klein Ovink, Walter McIndoe, Richard Vincent, Corey Sanson, Esther Geerlings, Johnny Schlepers, Dan Baxter, LJ Du Toit, Christian Wetting, Brian Cook, Braden Calder, Richard Mahy, & Paul Julian. It's appreciated what good quality coaches we have, and good that four current senior footballers found time to also coach juniors.

The sportsmanship trophies for the season went to:
Monique Ruiter (6th gr), Linette Lengkeek (6th), Robbie Perkinson (6th), Mikayla Binney-Cox (7th), Shannon Frost (7th), Christian van der Gulik (8th), Jaspreet Dharmet (8th), Dylan Hoefsloot (9th), Lucas Schlepers (9th), Daniel Gow (11th), Shane Hope (11th), Renko Barkema (13th), Samuel Burgess (13th), James Holani (15th)

Many thanks to Jane Harte for continuing to do an excellent job as secretary/treasurer. Thanks too to Pete Sheather for his support as vice-president.
