President's report 2009
In the 2009 season, Awakeri fielded 13 teams in the EBOP leagues, in the following
grades: 6th (2), 7th (2), 6th & 7th girls (2), 8th (2), 9th (2), 11th (2)
and 13th (1). There were a lot of younger players, and pleasing to have two
specified girls only teams.
The club is grateful to its sponsors: Bay Milking Equipment, Columbus Café, HTL Spreading, Da Silva Autos, Performance Zone, Energyscan, Janice Hendl & Associates, and Murphy Brothers.
In the 2009 season there were many highlights for the Awakeri
Soccer Club. These include:
After Emily Julian had scored five goals in a game against Thornton Reds, her
dad, Paul, who was refereeing, said he'd tackle her if she ran with the ball
any more. So after being tackled by the ref a few times, Emily and team mates
started passing the ball!!
The battle between the two 9th grade teams - Mosquitoes and Sharks. It was 2
- 2.
Emily Julian hit the post four times in another game, leaving her dad "needing
counseling after the game"!
Zac Fretwell scored 6 in a 13th grade game.
Finn Spod scored a hat-trick for 8th gr Aces
The tremendous successes of the All Whites and Wellington Phoenix giving our
footballers something to aspire to.
Awakeri had 5 EBOP rep players in 2009: 10th gr Lucas Schlepers, 9th gr Quest Tipping, 8th gr Jacob Davis, 11th gr Shane Hope, 12th gr Sam McPherson.
I would like to thanks our coaches: Dion Turvey, Mike Learmond, Esther Geerlings, Stuart Haig, Johnny Schlepers, LJ Du Toit, Christian Wetting, Daniel Hall, Kerry Looney, Dwayne McGuire, Braden Calder, Paul Julian, Craig Growden & Jeff van Beekhuizen.
The sportsmanship trophies for the season went to:
Nicole Webb (6th gr), Emma Hannan (6th gr), Keaton Turvey (6th), Emily Julian
(7th), Tylar Hall (7th), Ben White (7th), Isaiah Davidson (8th), Sarah Sheaff
(8th), Justin Perkins (9th), Oliver Thompson (9th), Jared Turvey (11th), Briar
