Awakeri Soccer Club

President's report 1998

In the 1998 season, Awakeri fielded 9 teams in the EBOP leagues, in the following grades: 6th (2), 7th, 8th (2), 9th, 10th, 11th and 14th. The number of players involved in soccer was very pleasing especially given the growing strengths of hockey and rugby and the continuing presence of netball.

The club continues to be grateful to its sponsors: David da Silva Autos, Adamson's Pharmacy, Barney Gray, Gould Contracting, Phil and Cheryl Brogden and Total Power Services.

Results were better in the younger age groups than the older ones. However the 11th and 14th grades hung in there and were rewarded. The 11th grade were excited to win their first game on August 8th and the 14th grade on September 5th.

Other highlights included:

the 6th grade derby between Autos and Strikers

Mark Petersen heading the ball off his goal-line to save a goal

Mark Ernest scoring from a goal kick!

Dale Hitchcock playing with his broken leg in a cast at a very enjoyable break-up

the introduction of family 7 aside soccer during the summer (thanks Stu Goodhew)

the naming of myself as a life member of the EBOPJFA

The game also continues to be popular in the school playground, although this was dampened slightly when Emma Bradley suffered a nasty broken leg during a playtime game between the boys and the girls. As she disappeared in the ambulance, under the influence of nitrous oxide, she still managed to ask "Who won? !"

I would like to thank the teams' coaches: Peter Sheather and Chris Stanton (6th); Craig Davies (7th); Evans McCready and Stu Goodhew (8th); Greg Robison (9th); myself (10th); Peter Fitzgerald (11th) and Tom Lowndes and Rod Kamphorst (14th).

This year our club had six EBOP reps: Mark Brogden and Tristan Gray (11th), Adrian Falwasser (12th) and Dale Hitchcock, Craig Petersen and Mark Roia (13th). Congratulations to these players.

The sportsmanship trophies for the season went to: Jonathon Hudson, Anthony Sykes (6th), Russell Sisam (7th), Ray Paul, Michael Etter (8th), Troy Jansen (9th), Jeremy Hawkes (10th), Sonya Pettinger (11th), Kristy Jury (14th).

We would like to thank the Awakeri School BOT and principal Peter Fitzgerald for their support. I would like to acknowledge the efficient work of Helen Ernest as secretary/treasurer.
