24 Jan 2006 Happy New Year everyone! Did anyone manage to spot three Kiwis playing in the World's top leagues on TV this morning? Ryan Nelsen helped Blackburn to a 1 - 0 win against Newcastle, Simon Elliott played for Fulham in their 2 - 1 loss to West Ham and Ivan Vicelich defended well for Roda JC in the 0 - 0 draw with Feyenord. These guys are all earning megabucks (e.g. $30000 a week) and playing with and against superstars. e.g. Ryan Nelsen did a good job marking Alan Shearer. On Thursday he'll be marking Rooney, van Nistelroy & co in the League Cup semi-final. Wouldn't it be great for an Awakeri player to get to that level. It can be done!

30 June Awakeri and Ohope 15th Grade teams played a catch up game at Ohope with the first half an even affair. Good attacking and equally strong defence saw the teams go to the break at 1-1. After good ball forward Ben McPherson powered on past the keeper early on then Ohope came back mid way through again off accurate ball ahead.
Awakeri stepped up another gear in the second half with forwards McPherson, Darren Groom and player of the match Richmond Brown turning the Ohope backs inside out. Brown scored 4 excellent goals with McPherson putting 3 more into the back of the net. Hayden Reeves along with David Wakelin also played strong supporting rolls in the halves giving the forwards intelligent ball.
Ohope created numerous opportunities almost pulling off a few more goals but were always on the back foot trying to counter the pace of this strong Awakeri side.
Final score 8-1 Awakeri

He has lost Keanu Carter, who has moved to Australia and Liam Richards, who is having a go at rugby, from last year's championship winning team. Ex-Tauranga City player Tony Lockhead is offered contract in USA, but trialling in Europe as well. He'd like to better the $50,000 to $100,000 per year he would earn in the USA.

Jono Whitaker, Simon Barr, Daniel Goodhew and Brad Armstrong were selected for the country team.
Pity there was not a 15th Grade rep side this year. The fitness, skill level and teamwork was incredible. Simon kept in the second half with the other three alternating between mid and backline. Jono set up two one on one attempts but finishing was lacking. Country 1-0 half time with both sides having even posssesion and territory. Another top goal 10 minutes from full time for Country. Final score 2-0.

14 Aug The league tables are up to date again!

8 Aug Soccer went ahead, with some entertaining games. Read the reports and look at the action pics from the 6th grade. A 13th grade Whakatane player falling off the fence at Awakeri twice into the still remaining flood waters was a highlight! Two team won by deault as the ravages of floods, calving, illness etc have an impact.

5 Aug It's raining again, putting this weekend's soccer in doubt! 15th grade Newcom Awakeri enjoyed their midweek 1 - 0 win against James Street.
A top performance by both sides was the key to an evenly fought match when Awakeri NewCom and James Street Cowboys 15th grade teams played a mid week catch up game. Both teams put together an entertaining fast clean game. Awakeri mid field dominated the first part of the half with their backs clearing up any breaks by James Street. There were plenty of opportunities for Awakeri but soft finishing and good defence held them out until Simon Barr finally slotted a nice shot past the keeper.
In the second half James Street put together some excellent passages of play but Awakeri keeper Jono Whitaker with backs Brad Armstrong, Neil Sax and Daniel Goodhew stopped all attempts and then put pressure back on with long ball forward.
Simon Barr was named player of the day for his accurate attacking and taking the opportunities when they were offered.

31 July Even when the weather forecast says it'll be fine, it rains all morning! At least some of the kids enjoyed a run. There is a new draw out for the 11th grade. 10th grade plays two weeks of catch up games now that their draw has run out. This Saturday for the games of 19 June and next Saturday the 24 July's games.

23 July All junior soccer (up to 15th grade and high school girls) in the Eastern Bay has been cancelled for this Saturday, with the state of emergency still continuing. A good decision from EBOJFA president Jim Carlin. Awakeri teams can start using the fields again for practices on Friday.

20 July Well the Eastern Bay is trying to recover from the flooding disaster, not to mention earthquakes, over the last few days. A lot of Awakeri soccer players and their families have been affected, as all other clubs will have been too. We all hope the recovery process goes as smoothly as possible.

9 July The league tables are up to date (see here). Good luck to the two Awakeri teams entered in the McMecking tournament at Ohope next Saturday 17th. They are the 13th and 15th grades.

25 June Last night 10th grade Awakeri Autos played their rained-off game against Ohope Two. While Autos scored early, they were held out by some good defending and excellent keeping, and only scored again just before half time. In the second half Autos applied a lot of pressure to the waning defence and went on to win 7 - 0. There was some good passing between the forwards, which opened up Ohope numerous times. Stephen Glassbrook's hat-trick and good midfield work had him named player of the match.

19 June All games were called off because of ground conditions.Games in competitive leagues will need to be replayed.

13 June 10th gr Da Silva Awakeri Autos knocked James St Rebels off the top of the table yesterday! Awa Tigers had their first win of the season too. 9th grade Dragons over came a 0 - 3 start to their game with Saints and won 7 - 5 !!
The reports are on line.

Today Awakeri's 11th grade rep team did well against some very strong opposition in the Jubilee Cup tournament. Awakeri won the first game against Westbrooke, but lost against Mt Maunganui and Whakatane. Cambridge eventually won the tournament. The Awakeri players enjoyed pitting their skills against some strong opposition, and will look forward to next year, with a number of the team still elegible.

21 Dec 2001 A very successful tournament ended the family soccer for the year. A warm humid night meant everyone was tired and dripping with sweat after their five games, but they all wore a smile. Merry Christmas everyone! Family soccer will resume when school goes back - first night February 4th 2002.

12 Dec Family soccer will hold a tournament on Monday 17th. The teams will be split into two pools and a round robin played. Congratulations to the old Elliots team. 24 Nov Thought of taking the kids up to Auckland to see the Football Kingz play? It's inspirational! and heaps of fun! They usually play Friday nights at Ericsson Stadium when they are at home. Click here for the Kingz draw. Family soccer progressing nicely, with some high scoring games.

10 Nov Following tornadoes causing havoc over the weekend, family soccer gave everyone a chance to let their hair down. Great to see Carla out there playing even though her house was almost destroyed. Sara Elliot spent the week on crutches after being on the receiving end of a ill timed tackle. As her boss said on Monday, it's meant to be 'friendly' family soccer!

29 Oct Family soccer went well. All teams turned up, probably 130 people. Some good games ensued, with the normal spirit maintained. Probably one of the few soccer events in the World where referees are not needed or used!

21 Sept Team photos on line (click here!), and action photos from the break-up day's games (click here!!)

16 Sept An excellent turn out at the break-up. The kids enjoyed the wet ground conditions, while the parents gave a good account of themselves in most of the games. Ricky Rowlands scored his first goal of the season for the 13th grade, putting away a nice header in the final seconds to draw the game. Quite a few parents made spectacular splashes as their footing failed! All players were presented with certificates and Moro Bars. The sportsmanship trophy recipients are: Jordan Steer (6th grade), Leah Sheather (6th), Keanu Carter (7th), Riki Roia (7th), Matthew Richmond (8th), Chelsie Pettinger (9th), Vikki Lowndes (9th), Hayden Soeters (11th), Mark Ernest (11th) and Matthew Ward (13th). Jobs left undone for the last 20 weeks were suddenly done. The weekend felt that much longer and some parents actually read the Saturday Herald before Sunday night."

"I usually only score one goal a season!" says Matthew, who transferred to Awakeri from Edgecumbe at the start of the season. Hotshots won the game 4 - 1 (match report). The All Whites have topped their World Cup qualifying group and will play Aussie next Wednesday in Wellington.

9 June Wynton Rufer has been replaced as Kingz coach. Let's hope the new Kingz manager continues to bring the Kingz into the BOP pre-season.

The team rosters for where the games are and who is on manager and transport duty have been distributed at school. they are also being put on this website. Click here to see if yours is on yet.

7 April What a good start to the season Bay Day was. Lovely weather, well organised. The Awakeri tems looked in good heart. Especially pleasing was the small teams football for the 6th, 7th and 8th grades. The new system seemed to be achieving its aims with these youngsters well involved in their 4 v 4. Highlight for the 13th grade was Ian Sisam's left foot volley to secure a draw with Whakatane.

1 April The 11th grade has been agreed to be split into A and B divisions, so the two teams have been sorted accordingly. Chris Stanton and Stu Goodhew are coaching the A div team, while Mike Scott and Peter Macdonald are taking the B div team.

22 March Team lists are being handed out today at school. Make sure your child gets his/hers. Practices are stated on the list.

10 March Final of family soccer on this Monday night (12th) with a tournament, usual 6pm start time. Coaches are currently being finalised for the teams, then a team-list will come out and players informed of practices. Mostly practices are in the school lunch-hour. First scheduled fixtures are on April 28th. Got the boots, white shorts, blue & white hooped socks and shin pads organised yet?

7 March. More enrolments bring a record tally of 120 players. Looks like 2 * 6th grade teams, 2 * 7ths, 1 * 8th, 2 * 9th, 2 * 11th and 1 * 13th. With the Awakeri School roll being 330, over a third are playing soccer!

4 March A successful enrolment week, with over 100 players on the books for this season, with a few more likely to dribble in in the next week. It doesn't look likely for a 15th grade team. When teams have been finalised and coaches appointed, players will be given a team list and informed of practices. Looks like BayDay tournament will be on the first Saturday of the school holidays, with the main fixtures starting after the holidays.

22 February Enrolment forms start being distributed at school. Enrolments can be sent in during next week to school, or made in person on the Saturday.

14 February From the AGM, enrolment day is Saturday 3 March 10 am - 12 noon. Subs the same as last year $10 for Under 6s and 7s, $20 for the rest, $30 family maximum. Team sponsorship is available at $100 per team, contact Helen Ernest about that. Read the President's report for last season.

27 January About 300 people turned up for Dave Boon's memorial service. Tributes flowed for an hour and a half, with many stories told that illustrated what a unique character we have lost.

19 January Dave Boon's funeral will be held in Australia, but there will be a memorial service at the Kawerau Town Soccer Club on Saturday 27 January at 11 a.m.

13 January 2001 Bad news. Kawerau and EBOPJFA stalwart Dave Boon died yesterday in Australia. Dave was well known as an excellent rep coach, especially in the 11th grade age group. Dave made a huge contribution to junior soccer in EBOP over the years and will be very hard to replace.
